220 Swift shot out...what options for long range calibers

I have a Remington Model 700 220 Swift in the Varmint Synthetic format. It has been an excellent shooter but has some throat erosion and is starting to loosen up the groups a bit. Since I have a 223 for varmints, I have been thinking about using the action-scope-stock combo and rebarreling the gun to make a long range hunting system. I was wondering if it is possible to convert it to a more potent short action caliber such as a 7wsm. What would I need to change to make it happen?? I am thinking that a barrel, a proper size bolt for the new caliber and possibly some magazine parts would make it happen. Am I way off or is it possible??

If it is on a long action, a 280 or 280 AI would be easy and very little action work would have to be done.

The WSMs require a .540 bolt face and the 280 has the same as the 220 swift (470).this would not require any extractor work either.

There are lots of cartriges with a .470 case head to chose from in a short action also.

If you hunt varmits you might wanna keep the recoil down. I think that the .260 would serve you well, with plenty of punch for varmits to past 1k. Better barrel life too.

No, I was not clear. I have a couple varmint rigs...I am looking to build a 700 yardish big game rifle that would be capable of taking an elk. Might not be possible with this format but thought I would ask people in the know. Thanks

If it is a short action I would recomend the 7/08 because it is very capable and has won many 1000
yard matches and with the heaver bullets well capable of taking down elk at 400 to 500 yards and
deer well beyond 600 yards.

The 7/08 AI (7/08x40) can be equal to the 7 WSM with some bullets and would not require any
action modifications. It will bump the velocity around 150 ft/sec over the 7/08.

The 7 WSM is a great cartrige but requires extensive action mods. And unless you want/don,t
mind spending more money it would also be a good choice.

A 284 Win would also be a good choice in a short action, you will have to seat the bullets pretty deep though.
Record-Setting .284 Win F-Classer

Naw, just throw in a single shot follower & call it Christmas. The 284 would be a great selection for this rig, top shelf brass & a TON of projectiles to play with.
Of course, as a Single Loader, the WSM would work just fine too & without compromising powder capacity with the heavy weights..

Might I add in the 7mm RSAUM? Shorter than the WSM & all in all, pretty much equal. Far more suited to feed from a short action.

If i was building on a short action i would use a single shot follower, my donor rifle for my 284 Win should be here the beginning of next week!

Thanks for all the help. I have started researching some of the calibers mentioned and some might fit the bill.
