Bedded stock

So I got brave and decided to pillar bed the stock on my ruger M77 MKII 7mm. I did it in stages (rear pillar, then the front pillar/recoil lug, then the trigger guard. It turned out great so now I am going to do my .270 and then my .243.

Here are some pics of the finished job. Sorry, I was kinda busy so i didn't take any pics of the process. I think I am going to do one last thing just for cosmetic reasons and that is to bed the rest of the action just so there is no gap between the action and the stock.

That's a good looking bedding job, is that a Boyds Prarie style stock? If so I have the same stock on my Rem700 .300wm and love it, but I need to do somemore bedding work to mine as well. Did you make your own pillars, or order them and how far infront of the barrell did you bed, looks like about an inch or so. Hope it shoots as well as it looks.

It is a Boyd's stock. I bought the pillars from Midway. I cut them down a little before I installed them and then cut them flush when I was done with my counterbore bit. I bedded about 1 inch of the barrell in front of the action.

I have wondered which is stronger, aluminum or laminated wood. Any Engineers here? Can't be too much difference. I 'm curious which is better, or is there? Seems aluminum would be more temperature sensitive , but the distance is small it could hardly make a difference. What glass did you use? I heared some negative about Accuglass(sp) - loosens over time or temperature? ? Don't think Brownels would sell it , if it were not a top rated product. lightbulb

You'll need that recoil pad if you don't have a brake on it, my boyd's stock's butt pad was hard as a rock! My shoulder is telling me I need one as well.

I finally loaded some rounds. I am trying the Berger 180 grain bullets with H1000 powder. I have 3 rounds each starting at 63.5 grains and going up to 68.0 grains. I hope I find a good load tomorrow when I go shoot it. I will report back with results.

I am pretty happy with the results. The best group I got was 1/2" at 100 yards with 66.5 grains of H1000 and the bullet seated .050 off the lands. I had to seat them that deep so they would fit in the magazine.
