Hi,

I have a Weatherby Accumark in .338-.378 with the factory muzzle brake. It's a great rifle but has SERIOUS recoil that will rattle your fillings loose. Will other brakes, like the Muscle Brake, make an appreciable difference, enough to justify the cost, trouble, and that the rifle will no longer work in most scabbards?

What brakes would people recommend? How much of a reduction in recoil should I expect?

Is there a cross-reference on effectiveness of the various muzzle brakes?

The factory brake is good. It main drawback is it has holes on the bottom that kick up stuff when fired near the ground. Recoil reduction is pretty good compared to the baffle styled brakes. Other than the JP tank brake I doubt many are going to be a night and day difference.

Have you ever used a "Muscle brake"?

The Weatherby brake is very efective and is about as good as you can get.

They are just above 50% Reduction. There are not any that I know of that will do 55%.

I would not change it. Replace the stock with a laminate or install the Mercury recoil reducers
that fit in the stock they add 10 to 15% in reduction.

The other thing is to add weight to the but stock by adding lead shot with epoxy to hold it in
place.

I use them in bulk. Would you like to buy one?

Buano , Give Ross Schuler a call 208-587-8993 He will set you up a 4 port brake for $45. I use his brakes on 5 of my guns . I put one of his 4 port brakes on my .338 Lapua and it shoots like a light load 308 ...At least 50-60% reduction .. He is in Idaho and he will ship right away...

Not sure what bullet your shooting but when I had my 338-378 Accumark I noticed a pretty sizeable difference in felt recoil between the 225's and 250's. If the recoil is more than you like maybe think about shooting a lighter bullet. Just a thought.

I have at least 20 gunsmiths using the Muscle brake as there preferred muzzle brake. The reason is it is a very effective recoil reducer and it eliminates the concussion/back-blast to the shooter.

I have replaced customers existing brakes with the Muscle brake and customers say it works better and is much more pleasant to shoot.

Some that I have taken off;
factory Barret 338lm
Factory Savage
Factory Weatherby
JP recoil eliminator
Ross 3 port
Harrels
Shrewd
Holland
Vias

What users of the muscle brake have to say?

"The recoil reduction performance of the Muscle Brake was simply superlative! I would recommend Jim's product in a heart-beat, without hesitation!"

"Since the Muscle brake install the rifle is definitely a "pussycat" to shoot and easy to control with the added benefit of no backblast whatsoever! I have fired other rifles equipped with muzzle brakes but most had an unpleasant backblast which in itself can lead to a dreaded flinch. Now becoming comfortable with this rifle has led me to a .194" group on my second 3 shot load development. Thanks again for a well designed product that actually does just what it was supposed to do with no hype whatsoever."

"I will say this about the Muscle brakes or CSR brakes. I will never have any other make brake put on my rifles. Jim's brakes are awesome in performance. I shoot my Dakota and Kevins Cheytac free recoil with no issues ever. Shooting this style at these matches I can most of the time get back on to see my hits at 800 yards. If I was full shoulder into the rifle no doubt I could spot hits even closer than that. I've seen many other brakes come in when bought and the finish is terrible...not so with Jim's brakes. I had a VAIS brake on my other rifle. The performance of the VAIS wasn't even close to the Muscle Brake."

I second the Ross Shuler brake. I have them on 270 WSSM, 300 Wby, 338-378 Wby and soon on a 378 Wby. Best design I have used, you can turn down to any diameter to fit in scabbard, the top ports really help reduce muzzle flip. Ross is quick and his price is honest. I replaced the Weatherby breaks which did work well; however, the blast prone was brutal.

OK folks, I got this rifle from a cop with arms almost as big as my legs & his reports of the recoil had me seriously concerned. After shooting it both from the bench & standing I concur with comments others made, the recoil is not bad at all, but the muzzle-blast is ridiculous!

I may be looking to change brakes to get less muzzle-blast, but not because of the Weatherby brake being ineffective. In fact, I would be willing to absorb a little more recoil to reduce the muzzle-blast.

I don't see any way to hunt with this rifle without hearing protection. Doing so would mean the next hunt would be without hearing!

The Vais brake is maybe 10-15% less effective than the factory brake, but it also has noticeably less blast. Like the factory brake, it'll kick up dust, etc, if you shoot prone.

I lean towards the Muscle Brake, or at least that style. Wish I still had access to a machine shop — I could design, make & install brakes & use my engineering degree for more than helping my daughter with her homework!
