Question about H1000 and 338 Lapua

I just received my 338 Savage FCP 338 and am about to work up loads starting with H1000. I have an 8# bottle bought within the last 5 months. I did a fairly extensive search on this site and came up with a starting load which is 89 gr. of H1000, 300gr Berger Hybrid, 215 primer, Lapua brass, .025 off lands. My question has to do with charge size. I understand, and have experienced first hand a change in both H1000 and Retumbo, requiring less powder over the last couple of years. Is 89gr. as a starting point Ok, or should I back off a couple of grains. Has anyone worked up loads with the most current lots of this powder. I'm looking for 2750-2800 FPS out of my 26" barrel. You are right on track. But to be safe I would load one at 87 and one at 88 and fired them first durring cleaning and break in. My guess is you will end up about 91 gr unless you have a hot batch of 1000 then you could be held back to 89 or so. Either way I feel you will be able to get the 2750 to 2800 number. Probably closer to 2750 with a 26" tube.

If H1000 doesnt give you what you want, give retumbo a try. I got very low es with 92 (94ish max) grains Retumbo and 2775fps Out of my RUM, but it should be very similar.

With my WM H1000 gave a bit higher SD and ES but always grouped tighter. I used he OCW Load development for both. Also I seem to get a bit more velocity out of H1000 but I have a very heavy 28" barrel that 1:10 twist.

Also this is not apple to apples but I would assume the heavier bullet/case capacity would lend itself more towards the slower powder.

How tight is the chamber in the Savage FCP? If at all tight (min-Spec), 89 gr could be close to max already. My 338 LM has a custom bbl and a min spec chamber. I run 91.5 gr H1000 and that is hotter than I would want to recommend to anyone else, but has been extremely stabile and accurate. My group size, ES, & SD got better the hotter I ran it all the way up to 92.5 gr. At 91.5 I get some bolt lift once in a while (hot days). At 92 I had ejector marks. Everything at or above 91.5 gr was single digit ES and sub 1/2 MOA.

Just got my Savage 111 338 Lapua and am also running Berger 300 OTM's but with CCI 250 primers and a brand new lot of H1000. Started with 90 grains. Could not setup my chrono due to too many people at the range. Grouping was about 1-1/2 inch at 100. 92 degrees that day. No signs of pressure with 90. Even fired 10 Hornady brass with very little bolt stick, also fired 10 ea Lapua, Norma and Nosler, no stick at all with those three.

I use 88.7 grains of H1000 on my 110 ba with 300 bergers, shoots rediculiously accurate

I had pressure issues with my factory savage 110 fcp even at 83 grains h1000 had it gone over and rebarreled to a 30" stick and now I use 89.6 grains of h1000 behind sierra 300 smks and it will one hole groups at 100 and further out has proved just as accurate. i am getting about 2800 with that combo

Honestly I don't know not much more than original I would guess 15-17 pounds scoped???

As good as it shoots I really don't bother with weight I have several lighter rifles for hicking around and such..... but if I feel a long shot is needed I would pack this one in a heart beat...or to stop a heart beat either way

Thought I would give an update on my Savage FCP 338. I ve got 60 rounds through it and the barrel appears to be broken in cleaning up quickly with minimum copper fouling. Even though I torqued the scope base screws to 30 inch pounds before scope mounting, they came loose. Cleaned the greasy holes and screws, and retorqued with Blue Locktight. I'll see how this holds up. Any advise would be welcome. Started with H1000, testing 89-91 Gr. with .5 increments. Seating depth .010-.040 out of the lands. All testing done at 100-200 yards. 89.5-90.5 grains produced the best accuracy, .030" off the lands at .5-.6 MOA average. 90.5 gr produced 2725 FPS. ES were excellent in with 5-10 FPS. I found a 20-25 FPS for each .5 gr increment. Started to see slight pressure signs at 91 gr/2750 FPS so I settled at 90.5 gr. Then tried 89 grains of Retumbo. I reluctantly cut into my much coveted lot that I use for my 6.5x284, but couldn't resist. Two 5 shot groups went into one hole each, perfectly round, at 200 yards. Both measured .25 MOA. I didn't bring my chronograph, but I expect the velocity to be in the 2700 FPS range based on my buddy's work with the same rifle. I'm going to pursue Retumbo and do chrono work and longer range testing based on these initial results and see how things go. Overall, I'm very impressed with
this rifle. Also like the NF G7 that I mounted on it. If I can get through my testing, I'm thinking of using it for big Alberta mule deer next month.
