I shouldn't even be asking these questions, but here goes. Was the action cleaned up at all when you did the barrel swap? What model B & C stock is that.. Dura Max?

Nice rifle

Truing the face of the action is not actually required in a Mauser mod 98 as the barrel face should lock up on the armourers lugs inside the action threads .
The barrel shoulder does no even have to touch the action face .
That's how Mauser designed them to work.
That is provinding no one has removed the lugs.
I lock my barrels on the lugs and have about .003 gap at the barel shoulder but each to his own , you can lock up on the face if you want .

i always lock them on both, nice rifle-free bump

Mauser military barrels have no real proper shoulder and don't lock up on the face.
That is why the face is not machined on a Mauser 98 in original condition .
That is the correct way to do one because that is the original design. Whatever came later is a modification of what Mauser intended.
However it is not wrong to do other ways that still work but technically they can't be termed as the correct way .
If the barrel is already threaded and a sloppy fit I find locking up on the lugs to be much better than the face and this is what Mauser was doing with this design . Creating an easy repair system for miltary armourers with pre threaded and chambered barrels that were of dubious fits. The only thing that had to be fairly close was the depth of the chamber and that could be easily adjusted by turning a few thou off the end off the barrel or inserting a reamer by hand after fitting.
Once you true the face and are threading your own barrel you can do it any way you want and it still works ok but locking up on both takes more precise work.
