A few days ago I was reading about a custom rifle builder that will let you build your rifle in his shop for $1000.00 plus parts but for the life of me I can't remember his name.
Thanks, Frank

Don't know cost or specifics but I believe Gordy Gritters does something of that nature.

I had not seen that one but it looks good also, the one I read about on this site somewhere is a week long class where you build you're own rifle in the riflebuilders own shop and take it home with you.

KRP, thanks for the link. Mr. Gradous has a beautiful shop. (And a lot of patience I think). I can't imagine guiding anyone through a build in my cluttered little shop. I'd have to move the anvil out of the way, and it would probably disturb the owls living in the rafters.

Thanks again. I didn't know anyone did this. I think it's great!

Good thread WK.

Lowlight did a review of Gradous and the process. It's published on snipers hide. I'm thinking it would be interesting to most guys but once they saw what it took would elect to save their time and money and just have it done. Especially if you crashed the lathe, wrecked an action or barrel. All it takes is one turn of a handle the wrong direction or a split second late. Kind of takes the fun out of doing it yourself. I doubt a novice gets to do much more than watch and stir epoxy.

Reminds me of a sign I saw that went something like this.

Labor rate:
$50 per hour
$75 if you watch
$100 if you help

My hat's off to Gradous. When we have visitors our production goes to a crawl due to having to reply to every question or suggestion.

i sorry but why would you send a couple grand on a rifle then spend another grand to put it to gether.

If you want to biuld a rifle then fine build a semi custom with a factory action like savage or Rim. If you want a full custom then let the pros do there job thats what they do for a living and feed there familes with.

I'm sure he is but have to agree with submoa. I had semi-custom rifle done using Savage LA action for under a grand >>> http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f22/my-budget-270-ai-97745/
If that's the kind of rifle you want that's fine but that isn't the kind of rifle that is being discussed. The rifles being discussed take about $3000 for parts. Only certain kinds of parts can be used. If you want to build it yourself it's $2250 labor. If you don't want to build it yourself it's $1250 labor. I believe that extra $1000 does include a cabin for a week.

L:DL! I didn't mean no insult other than simply agree with submoa and that Robert Gradous is a pro.

http://www.gradousrifles.com/images/class/IMG_0773.jpgThe gunsmithing class is available for an additional $1,000.00 over the cost of any of the standard rifles I offer on this website

that makes the cheapest gun you can build $4200 bucks and thats the light tactical with no options :-{

if i was going to spend that much i would want the pro to build it not me.

not saying i cant do it but thats is why you are paying that much for the rifle
