Who shoots the .270 Win.?

I have a 24 year old rifle chambered in a .270 Win., how would I know when it is time to change the barrel? My rifle is a Rem. 700 BDL, 22" barrel...I was thinking that if I do decide to have the barrel changed out it would be in the same caliber, or in a 6.5-06. I sure would like to read what's your thoughts on the topic.

When it no longer shoots to your expectations, or when you decide it's time for a change of caliber/cartridge/contour/length/etc..

There are a good number of 270 cal guys here, the 270 has some excellent heavy for cal bullets now so you can say it's a legit long range chambering. It just depends on what you want to do and the target game.

I also have an old Rem 700 in .270, bought 2nd hand, that I've been using for 30yrs. I've tried not to use it too much rapid fire, unless into a mob of pigs, and it has fired several thousand rounds yet still groups 3 shots under .75". While you're happy with it's accuracy there is no need to stress about it's age.

older Win M70 here, it shows it's age, but hey it's just a hunting rifle and still does moa, and plenty of magazine length left, so with some throat maintenance I doubt I'll ever replace it.

Go somewhere you can be ROCK stead and shoot at posted targets set up at 50 yards. Sandbag the rifle if you need to. If you can shoot 3 rounds and have their holes in the target touching....you dont need to change anything.

I've got a 270WSM, but sooner or later I'll get another 270 Win. Love that caliber. Heck, I may even do a 270-AI with a fast twist, like FEENIX did! Talk about Awesome!
Like bigngreen said, there's quite a few 270 fans here, & with the new bullet offerings, the LR capabilities of the good ol 270 is really starting to shine!

If you do re-pipe it, go with at least a 26" tube.
I just had my ol Win-70, 30-06' turnned into a 300WSM, & I was Pleasantly surprised that the 26" fluted Hart #4, wasn't much heavier at all than a sporter barrel. Nice to cary.
A strait up re-barrel is comparatively inexpensive.

Does it shoot??? If it does well, leave it alone. If it sucks and the throat's burned it's time to do other things. I traded a somewhat tired 7stw this year that was still shooting 1/2" groups; I'm still kicking myself for not holding on to the rifle. The last group I put through it was sighting in a 6x to trade it with, and in a varying wind, it put down a .4" 100 yard 3 shot group with varying wind.
I love the 270 as a good lighter rifle, and 130-150 grain pills will all be sub moa and usually 1/2 " if your rifle is good. I've shot 270's more than any other rifle this year I'd guess.

270 win is my favorite caliber of all time. I have several.

Personally I don't see the 6.5-06 as a glorious 6.5 caliber but it is interesting. It's your choice but when the time comes I'd certainly maintain that old veteran rifle in 270 Win.

Depending on what you plan to do in terms of distance shooting, there's no need to change anything on it until you have proven to yourself it has lost accuracy to your satisfaction.

Aldo mine has only shot about 600 rounds when the time comes to re-barrel I was thinking just re-chamber it to 30 06. May bee

I've had four '06's and three 270's I still have 2 of the 270's and none of the '06's. I like 30 cal, but if you go there get a 300 mag of some sort. You can always back off a 300 win if needed, but you can't really hot-rod that '06 well enough with heavy bullets.

then here's a thought:

order yourself a barrel that you want now as the prices will only increase as time goes on. choose either chrome moly or stainless, pick your twist rate (10T for 270), get it in a contour similar to your factory barrel, which is usually a sporter #3 where it will finish at 24" long. stick that tube in the safe and use it in the future when the time comes.

if you haven't thought about makers, I like the following:

cut rifle: Krieger, Bartlein, Brux, Obermeyer, Rock. I'd shoot any of them.

button rifle: Hart, Lilja, Shilen, Broughton.

Criterion barrels are button rifled and are or were owned by Krieger. Those are the barrels you'll find on factory Weatherby Mark rifles sold by Thompson Long range, etc.

I like the 5R or 5C style rifling.
