Need a new scope in the $1000 range

Hey guys, looking for a new scope to put on top my savage 111 chambered in 30-06. What are the better options? I was look at a Vortex Viper PST but I heard from an experienced friend that the glass quality just isn't as good as some of ther others in that price range.. I'm gonna be using it for hunting and target shooting, possibly out to 800 yards for now as that's the furthest I have available to me at the moment. I have roughly 1 week to decide so any help is appreciated!

To the OP, your 'friend' is FOS, clear up to the cranium. Who am I to say, not that I don't have a couple plus some others to compare to.

2 detractions of the PST line is one, the weight and two the zero stop arrangement.

A little bird told me the PST glass is the same as the Razor glass.

A 4.5-16 x 50 in either focal plane will leave you with plenty for a good set of rings, some lapping compound and a lapping bar.......

That's good to hear, I was pretty much set on the pst. Maybe the one he looked through was a lemon or he's just against the brand..who knows lol. He's an avid shooter and knows his stuff so I just kinda went along with it to an extent.

The only ones I seem to find readily available to me are the 6-24 which is what I was looking for. It's in SFP, I wanted to get an FFP to try out but can't find one. MOA or MIL don't matter to me either, I should add.

SidecarFlip, the weight isn't a huge deal for me but what don't you like about the zero stop? Just the way you have to rotate back to it?

I've never done any lapping before.. Looks easy enough. I'm probably gonna get NF rings and a 20 MOA Base to go with this scope as well.

I will look more into the Sightrons and Zeiss

Try Cameraland or Weby Shops. Both advertise on here and both carry the Vortex line.

6-24 IMO is a bit stout for your caliber. 4.5-16 would work fine again IMO and a bit less expensive.

The CRS stop is not really a hard stop but more of a index point. I prefer a hard, absolute stop.

My Vortex PST 6-24 gets cloudy when you reach 15-16x.
It's annoying as heck.
You have to move your eye around in the eye box to find a spot that is crystal clear.
You get some decent options for $750, but the scope haze is a bummer.

Interesting. Mine is clear as crystal all the way to 24X with no abberations across the entire field of view. The eyebox becomes a bit touchy over 16X, but thats it.

In fact I mounted the PST and one of my Mark4's and compared side by side and to my eye, the PST is as clear at extreme distance/magnification, as the Mark 4 is.

I believe I'd contact Vortex (through their website) and make arrangements to return it. I'm reasonably sure they will make good on the issue. No need to be dealing with any issue pertaining to quality of image.

Yah i'm going to buy a scope next monday and I'm gonna take a look through a few of the scopes. I'm still really leaning towards the pst. I want the extra zoom for when I do get into those farther ranges. If some do have a problem being cloudy I will ask if I can just take a look through a few of them. I hear a lot more good than bad about these scopes, especially in the 6-24. Would you recommend the FFP or SFP? I don't think it's really a big deal to me one way or the other, just that lots of people also say once they use an FFP they won't go back.

Keep in mind that the FFP will cost more and then there is the reticle cross hair size/growth issue. If I didn't have a good rangefinder, I'd have a FFP. As it is, I don't need one........

Though I like the Vortex better than most offerings, any will be good and all the manufacturers/importers will stand behind them. It's just good business,

Here we go again about the Vortex FFP reticle getting thicker. It absolutely does not get thicker in relationship to the target you are looking at. The target and the reticle enlargers the same amount when the power increases.

Another reason to get the Vortex is how easy you can get their custom elevation turret.

I have a 6-24x50mm PST FFP MOA scope with their custom turret which is dead nuts accurate!!!!!!!!!!
