No.1 7MM STW

Ok Ruger guys.I am new to reloading and Long range.I have a No.1 7MM STW Laminate/stainless.I will be shooting berger vld's in 168 and 180.Does any one have any loads worked up that perform well in your no.1? also i have some sierra match king hollow points in 168 and 100 gr.would they have similar ballistics to the bergers? Any help will be greatly appreciated and may lead to a small reduction in the local whitetail population? thanks for looking.

While I don't have a Ruger, I will chime in on my findings in my Sako 7STW. I have a box of 168gr VLD's but have not tried them yet but will soon. I did try 140gr VLD's and it does not care for them. My Sako and a previous 700 Sendero SF really liked 160gr Accubonds and that weight range bullet seems to favor the STW in my opinion. My advice to you is to get some Retumbo powder and try it first as that powder seems to be the ticket in a lot of STW's.

Way too much gun for whitetail....sorta like killing a fly with a cannon but one load that works well with 168g is 72g Reloader 25. Start at 70 and see how it shoots.

i have one that shots the 168 real well i use 7828scc at 75 grains i worked up to that from 73. hope that helps oh its a sub 1/2 groups you can cover most with a quarter.

Ive killed 8 whitetail does so far this year with the stw. Dont know why youd feel its tom much gun. A bit more then needed maybe but its sure not like killling a fly with cannon. Ive killed others this year with the 2506 257 wby, 7rem mag and the 300 wby and the stw did no more meat damage then any of the others when the bullet was placed in the right spot. As a matter of fact the only deer i really messed up this year was with the 2506. i hit it in the spine right about the front shoulder at 200 yards (misjudged the distance) and took out the back straps and both front shoulders. Sure the stw would have done the same but a 3030 probably would have too. I dont save deer ribs and try to shoot the deer behind the shoulder in the ribs so as far as im conserned I lost no meat at all with the 8 i shot with it and i used a 150 nos ballitic tip to do it. A bullet kind of notorious for damage.

Ill add this to it while i talk about meat damage. Ive shot deer with about every brand and type of bullet from quick expanding sierras and bts to barnes tsxs. I find little if any differnce in the damage they do. Put a bullet behind the shoulder and youll eat venison. Put one on the shoulder and youll loose at least those shoulders. If anything premium bullets just insure youll loose both shoulders instead of the off chance youll only loose one with a quick expanding bullet. I shoot upwards of 50 deer a year so I get a bit better big picture then some who shoot a couple deer blow the hell out of one then condem a bullet.

I have a friend who uses 168gr matchkings for hunting.I thought that was a big nono?I was thinking i'm going to end up shooting bergers or barnes which ever the gun ends up having a taste for.
