im trying to choice a new long range hunting rifle . ive narrowed it down to two different rifles . one being the savage model 12 long range precision chambered in 243 win or 260 rem and the other being the savage model 110 fcp hs precision chambered in 300 win mag or 308 win . this rifle will be for hunting whitetail deer and long range shooting . maybe the occisional coyote that crosses my path . any one with any experience with either these rifle please give me your advice.

for a max range of 600 yards the .260 would be about perfect. It of course gets easier with the 300 Win but at the expense of more powder, more expensive bullets and alot more recoil.
If I had the choice of only one LR rifle I would be going with as much horespower as possible, but still be able to shoot it dollar wise.
How much do you think that you'll be shooting it? Do you handload? If you plan on doing any volume of shooting I would go .260 hands down.

if you dont handload go .308 hands down.

max distance for deer five - six hundred yards

650 is the limit I put on my .243 for deer and antelope. I'd go less on a muley.

Any of the .308 based cartriges will do you, don't forget about the 7mm-08.

I'll laugh at you if you get a .300 win mag for white tail (not needed) and targets (too much recoil to be fun).

Sorry, can't help you with the Savage never had one.

right now i have a remington 700 sps varmint chambered in 308 win its still in the factory stock for now. first in need to replace the scope. it came with a 4-12x40 something , i think its a bushnell banner with remington caps. it has no eye relief but still manage 1 moa @ 100 yds . any suggestions for a scope my budget is about 600 dollars.

you shouldn't have any problem finding a good leupold but i would reccomend also taking some of that money and get a decent scope mounting system as a scope is only as good as what holds it on.

Yep for his purposes a VXIII 3.5-10x50 would be a great choice and they can be had well under that used.

Also the Leupold tactical in the 4.5-14x50 would be a great choice and well within the price range buying used on the classifieds here, Sniper's Hide, or Ebay.

Good choice. See my above post on the scope choices.

This is by far the best deal going right now. Use their promotion for 50 off 500 and the scope cost about 460 with shipping. Vortex Viper HS Tactical Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 5-15x 44mm Side Focus

decided on a vortex viper hs lr 4-16x44mm for a scope . ive already got night force rings and bases . now for the new rifle ive decide on another 308 win now to decide on what stock i want it on. dont the models of the stocks but they are both vertical grip stocks. one is a hs precision and the other is a mcmillian . theyre both savage model tens the only differnce is the stocks . any thoughts on the scope or what rifle to choose?
