Hey all,
I had a question about 7mm wsm. I know it is not that popular of a load but I snagged a browning A-bolt new in 7mm WSM for 375 bucks with leupold mounts and rings and 60 rounds of winchester super X. I hunted with the super X last year and it worked out well enough, however, I am dissappointed with the rounds over all. It is ok to hunt at 200 or less yards but it is not a crazy accurate gun. At 100 yards I was getting between 1.5-2 inch groups, while with my old beat up savage 110 in 7mm rem mag I get 3/4 inch or less, groups at 100 yards. One might ask why I even bother with the browning A-bolt if my savage shoots so well, well needless to say, the Browning A-BOLT is a much lighter/smaller gun to carry around in the woods and the savage is really starting to show signs of wear.
So my question is.....does anyone have a 7mm WSM, if so which brand/type rounds do you shoot?
The funny thing with my savage 110 is if I use federal or winchester ammo, it shoots terrible...2+ inch groups at 100 yards, but using remmington core-locs it shoots the 3/4inch or less groups. So I am wondering if maybe my A-BOLT just does not like the winchester super Xs and I should be shooting something else? Unfortunately I do not think remmington core-loc comes in a 7mm WSM or else I would have tried that.

I answered your other post and hope it will help you.

I have built many WSMs and SAUMs and the 7mm is one of my favorite short Mags for power, trajectory, ballistics
and energy in a compact package.

Dont give up on it.

The 7WSM isnt popular, but it is still an awesome round! I've got two of them and am thinking of building a third. JE is spot on about the ballistics being great although the only way to really see one shine is with hand loads. If handloading is out of the question you might want to buy several boxes of different ammo (a big investment I know) and shoot them until you find one that works the best then go buy several boxes of it. Then down the road you can have it rebarreled and start handloading after the LR addiction has hit you full force! Good luck.

This is very true and I have tried to figure "Why".

The best reason I can come up with is= If I had a 270 Winchester and wanted to up the performance
in .277 cal and reduce the overall length of the rifle, I would build a 270 WSM.

If I had a 7mm Rem Mag and wanted to up the performance in a short mag there is no way. The 7 WSM
will come close, but it will not out do the 7 RM. It is shorter/more compact and a little lighter.
so why change is there is no performance gain.

But if you don't have a 7 RM and want a great 7mm cartrige in a short action the 7 WSM is one way to go.

Of all the Short magnums produced by the factory the 7 WSM has the most case capacity and a
great bullet selection. (Whats not to like).

The limited amount of factory ammo may be it's downfall but it's not the cartriges fault.

If I were going to build a wildcat with the WSM case, I would neck down the 7 WSM case to 6.5
for case capacity and bullet selection.

Some great rifles have gone the way of the Do Do bird and others have been resurrected by
shooters that know there value. New bullets, barrels and powders have helped (The 280 rem Is
one of these).

So I have stocked up on brass and will weather the storm for the 7 WSM if nessary because it "IS"
a great cartrige.

Just some comments and my opinion.

Here's a pic of a few of them. A little off topic, sorry!

The 264 Raptor is a wildcat I came up with in the search for the perfect sheep rifle. Its a 6.5/300 RSAUM 40* Improved. It may not be the perfect cartridge, but we havent found any changes needed yet. It allows loading a 130 accubond in a Remington Model 7 action and will run them 3200fps!

Hello i live in AZ and do not own my 7mm WSM anymore, but i do have 2 boxes of 20rds each (40rds) 7mm WSM Winchester Supreme, GPX 2, Ballistic Silver tip, 140gr, These go for about $ 44 bucks on cheaper than dirt...ect. I would love to sell both boxes $ 60.00 and ill pay for shipping. email me at [email protected]

Thanks all.
I have sold my 7mmWSM not being able to buy ammo locally anymore.

I did buy a new 300WSM though to replace it which has plenty of local ammo. :D

Wow, that was fast BigEclipse! 3 days from wanting advice, you sold 7WSM. Note...I don't think it was your A-bolt that was inaccurate unless the previous owner did something to it or got a lemon. The Abolt is normally very accurate. Maybe it just didn't like the Fed factory ammo.

I would have bought your Abolt 7WSM; I was shopping the web for many weeks for a good deal but 2 days ago I scored bigtime with a super deal on a new Savage 14 in 7mm RM. I really liked the WSM idea but in the end the 7RM won out.

I reload, so the availability wouldn't have been a problem. However, boiler room eventually might have been.

I really enjoy shooting the 7wsm, best load if not reloading would be the Federal Trophy Tip in 160 grain, i have killed Elk 335 yards and 420 yard, trying out the new Federal Trophy Cooper this season, every single animal i have taken has been a one shot kill, the only one that went almost 100 yards (mule deer)i hit him a little low, i have not had any issue getting ammo, so many places to order from, in fact the last 4 boxes i got was from Cheaper Than Dirt. If your rifle doesn't shoot out past 200 yards, than i would say possible gun it self or the type of ammo, but mine shoots excellent groups.(gun)
