8mm Remington Magnum

I have always wounded if a 6mm Rem. 7mm Rem Mag, & 8mm Rem Mag would not make a great 3 gun set for hunting North America. The only one I have had any reservations with is the 8mm Rem Mag because of bullet selection.

lloyd, You have good experience, what's your favorite whitetail load and typical distance you harvest them? If you have an 8mm rem mag you are using.? Or is it a 8mm rem mag necked down to something.

I had one and the recoil was so brutal I never even got it up to full power loads. Pulled the barrel and installed a 340 Weatherby Mag on it. Now it's a pleasure to shoot. Oh I guess I should say there is a brake on the 340

1100 Remington Man

I always wanted the Remington Metric Trifecta, so I went and did it plus one.

6mm Remington
7mm/08
7mm Remington magnum
8mm Remington Magnum

I think i am ready for anything.

The awesome 8 rem-mag was one of the greatest cartridges ever designed and is a tribute of how manufacturers can destroy a product because of their own incompetence!!! Just put a nosler partition or barnes x-bullet on top and you'll take on anything in North America without any worry whatsoever.

I got one of these back in the early eighties. at the time i was shooting a 7RM and loving it. my brother sent me the gun and said to try it on elk. it would shoot the 200 gr nosler partion @ the same speeds the 7RM would shoot the 160. The first elk i shot with it was a big cow @ about 500 yds. She went tits up like she was struck by lightning and i was hooked. This gun never was a tack driver. It would shoot decent groups, 1 to 1 1/2 inches, but it was a meat killing machine. I took it all over the world it seems, moose in BC, sheep hunting in AK, all over the west....my longest shot to date was with this gun. Bull elk @ 815yds.......everybody always complained about a lack of bullet selection for the 8mm..... all i ever needed was one, the 200gr nosler. AJ

It sounds like we finally found some 8mm Mags fans. I have a model 700 BDL. Had a muzzelbrake installed and some trigger work done and it runs fine. The best combo I have found for my particular use is: 220 gr Gamekings,79 gr H4831.Seems to do fine up to 800-900 yrds. I think there are better options for whitetail deer(to much gun) but it will work just fine. It is obviously a better large game( elk, bear) hunter. Another good combo is 180gr Nosler BT,81 gr H4831.With this load be aware of bloodshot meat dont shoot em in the shoulder. Good Luck. 25yr exp
