Hi guys.....I picked up this old '06 Mountain rifle today for $400 and it is in really nice shape for a '64 model. I don't think it has been fired much judging by the boltface and lugs. The bore looks great! I'm going to use it primarily to test my bullets so I don't wear out my spendy rifle:) It just has a cheap tasco scope with a one piece leupold or Redfield mount? Anybody know what these are normally worth?.The guys dad owned it and carried it around in his pickup so the bluing is rubbed off the muzzle and it has had some finish touched up....Rich

Looks like a good "truck gun" to me. You got a good deal on it if the condition's good inside. The last '60's m700 I saw in a gun store was in good but not new condition and was between 5 and 6 hundred.
The older rem's had good barrels and were usually good guns. It may not like your (spendy rifle's) load so keep that in mind. Most of the time when I get into another barrel in the same caliber I have to at least tweak the load for accuracy.

Ya, I've had good luck with the old remingtons as well. The triggers are usually better than the new ones too. I'm not concerned about it liking my bullets as far as accuracy, but I do a lot of testing for expansion at low velocities. This will be the primary use, but I may want to carry it occasionally for brushy country hunts, etc........rich

If is has a correct serial number you could use it or sell it for an M40A-1 build.

Good luck with your '06. I've recently gotten into the '06 based cals. again with two 270's last year and a 35 whelen this year. I really need to get a deer tag this year to blood one of the new rifles, and here in N.D. tags are scarce(I got bumped to the secondary drawing already).

It is actually a BDL Custom Deluxe. Mountain rifle versions were not made until 1988. It is a nice clean looking rifle and should serve you well.

PS. If the scope is an older tasco and made in Japan they are pretty good scopes. I have one on a beater 06 that has been going stong for 30 years.

Well fist off its not a mountain rifle. They werent introduced till the 1980s. Its an old bdl. Before you religate it to beater status you might want to shoot it. those old bdls can be some of the finest shooting factory iron ever made.

The reason that I called it a mountain rifle is it has a 20" factory barrel. I've had a couple of the early 700 BDL's, and you are correct, they can be really good shooters. It definitely is not headed for the scrap heap:D...Rich

Rem put 20" tubes on standard cal.s the first year or so with the m700 for some reason. Truth be told-- probably won't matter even 50 fps for you.

Actually, less velocity won't hurt at all since I test expansion with reduced loads I just won't have to reduce as much!:D.......Rich
