I'm looking into getting a new barrel on my Winchester control feed 270 wsm. Although I'm partial to the 7mm saum, 300 WSM looks interesting also. Think I'm stuck with the short mags because of the mag bolt face and short action. Opinions?
Elk and sometimes deer are the intended targets.

350 rem mag
325 wsm

7 RSAUM is far and away superior to the 300 WSM. Except when it's not as good.

Seriously... more enjoyable and plenty adequate most of the time vs a little more punch when needed.

The 300 WSM is very good also. I am shooting 2975 fps out of a 24" barrel tikka t3 with a 208 Amax .653 bc with RE19. Run the ballistics and see how it compares to the others. I like it over the smaller caliber short mags. All are good though. This load averages around .35 moa in this rifle.

Fast twist barrel for 270WSM, or 300WSM would be my Top choices. I own both, & love both. Make sure to throw AT LEAST a 26" pipe on your new one.

I'd love to have a 325WSM if there was any decent bullet selection in 8mm, but its kinda dismal in that department. But, if you want a wild cat, a 338WSM would kick ***!

Why didn't they come out with a 338 WSM ?
Rcbs anticipated this-the local shop even had some rcbs 338 wsm dies in stock right before win went with the 325.
Supposedly they got better balistics out of the 325 even though they had to go to lighter bullets to get there.
I'd have gotten a 325, but a lot of bullets in 8mm are for the mauser, and most of the rest can't be driven that fast in a mid size case. Plus I have both a 300 and a 338 win. I'd go Barnes in 8mm.
The rcm's weren't even a twinkle in Hornady's eye when win was farting out the wsm's.

I would do the 7mm WSM, much better bullets and better ballistically then the SAUM or 300 WSM. Not to mention the SAUMs are a dead stick, may not be to long before brass is even discontinued for those Rem offerings.

The 7mm WSM is a great round especially with a good long rnage bullet. Some think the 180 gr Berger is to heavy for this round but I have been very impressed with its performance.

Another great option would be the 6.5mm WSM but only if it will be used in a manner where there will be no high volume shooting. It is a great wildcat.

Like I said in earlier post I rebarreled mine to 7 wsm with a Brux #4 contour bbl. My only regret is I wish I went with w #5 0r #6 contour bbl.......

Thanks everyone for all the feedback.

Is that wish related to recoil? The 7mm wsm in a light Browning is the only rifle that ever scoped me. :D
