Can I get a recommendation for a set of rings and bases for a new Winchester EW model 70? I think a Leupold 3-9 VXII will be going on. I like the Leupold bases but there are so many different types. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

EGW is what I put on that same rifle. The "HD" rings and bases are great. They're a little cheaper at SWFA but you should call to see if they're in stock.

Can't go wrong with Warne, very strong if weight not a concern. If not needing cant the Talley 1 peice are hard to beat. Lots of great choices, Murphey Precission here on the site is first class as well and will build to your specs. EGW HD are great and there service is as well. Start with what you are looking for then budget.

Ditto that's the base I used on my M-70.
The TPS TSR-W wrings are the best value for the dollar as well. I've slowly moved to them for all of my rifles after having such good results with the first couple of sets I tried.

Not much really. Any of those recommended will serve the desired purpose. Some just do it for a lot less.

Nothing wrong with Leupold was going to put control mounts on Model 70 ended up putting on Leupold Dual Dovetail mounts and Rings Low with 3.5x10x40mm VX3 CDS.
I have used TPS Weaver Burris Redfield & never had any problems. Just go with what style you like. Just FYI my largest Cal. is 300 H&H Mag.

Look at the Burris Signiture Select rings. The inserts will not mar the scope and the +\- inserts allow for extra adjustment . I am using them on all of my rifles now and I am very happy with them. You also don't need to lap them.

I like them alot also and have them on all but one of my rifles. Leupold makes a Long Range STD base for the LA and SA Win M70. That mount combined with the Burris Signature STD style rings adds more MOA than most people have a need for.
If your scope is a 1" then you can also get the Burris insert kit for less than $10 (I think) and add 20MOA there. To my knowledge, they never came out with the kit for 30mm scopes. In my opinion, they should, I think they would be popular. JohnnyK.

I just received my 2nd custom made Murphy 20moa pic rail this week. Not only is Cameron a great guy to deal with, the custom rails were the same price as the "off the shelf" rails. Quick shipping, perfect fit & VERY well made, I plan to order a 3rd today. I have Badger, Leupold & NightForce bases, I think I'm going Murphy from here on out.
I am weening (sp) my rifles from the Standard Leupold Bases. That is all I had for years & they fit "that" bill. The down sides being this (at least for me): No MOA, I shoot long range WAY more than I ever used to & I need the extra adjustment. The windage adjustable rear ring mount is a weak link, I've seen more than one shear the lugs off the ring. They weren't mine & I don't know why it happened, all I observed was the after effect. I can tell you that, they belonged to individuals whom I feel are competent & don't treat their rifles like crap. 3rd, you can't just swap out a scope like you can with a pic rail setup. Having better than a dozen highend rifles, I find more & more need to swap some of my high end scopes from rifle to rifle. With a Picatinny rail, this job is VERY easy, not so much with the leupy Standard setup. 4th, holding power- With a picatinny rail, I have the ability to choose my rings in direct relation to the application of my setup. Most of my rings have twice the surface area of the Standard Leupy setup, providing more grip, more rigidity & more holding power. The reason the larger rings are more important is, most of the Long Range shooters/hunters have BIG robust optics (NightForce, IOR Valdada etc) with tube diameters from 30mm to 34mm to even 35mm & typical objective lenses between 50mm & 60mm. This translates into optics weighing FAR more than the average 1" tubed 3-9. The extra strength isn't JUST about bragging rights
, it's about holding $2k+ optics in place on a $3k- $5k rifle to obtain the very best performance & reliability possible.Here is an example of my Leupold MK4- M5A 34mm tubed 6.5-20 Next to a Nikon Monarch 6.5-20 with a 1" tube to provide better visualization of the immense size/weight difference of the optics common to our application.

So the TPS rings will work on the EGR base? I like this combo if it works.
Medium or low for a leupold 3-9x 40mm?

Most likely either will fit the rifle. Remember if you use a rail mount it adds a good bit of height vs standard bases so you don't need to go as tall with your rings.
Also it depends on what stock you have and how it fits you best for eye/sight alignment.
The best advice I could give is to start with the lows, mount them and then shoulder the rifle and sight through the rings as though the scope were mounted. If your looking basically straight through the center when you open your eye, you have the right height. If not you need to either go up or down.
