I like(ed) Marlin Leverguns. I'm particularly interested in the 338 Marlin Express which has great carry characteristics as well as mid range capabilities. The one I bought was pretty bad. After spending some money at the gunsmith to try to get it straightened out, I finally had to send it back. It's functioning now but the taste left in my mouth of how bad it was and the grief it caused in the field still remains. The reason... the Remington people now own and manufacture Marlins. They've taken this particular model/caliber out of production and after talking to Customer Service, have not indicated it will ever return??? I asked... no reason given. It was no more than introduced and they discontinued it. I suppose I understand how they could have problems but this video illustrates Remingtons willingness to flood the market with junk rather than stopping obviously defective units from leaving the plant. My experience is just one of many. Here's a video review from a guy that says it all.

(you won't find a review like this anywhere other than from a Consumer)

In comparison, you can take a Tikka, made with inexpensive materials, which bears the cost of importing, sold at a very competitive price and make a rifle that returns overwhelming satisfaction from Consumers. What's happened to American Manufacturing or at the very least, Remington?

Marlin isn't owned by Remington Arms. Remington, Marlin and Bushmaster are owned by Freedom Group which is in turn owned by Cerberus Capital Management.

Correct but manufactured by Remington. The link is blocked so Google "Death of the Marlin Levergun" on You Tube

freedom group is too big, they have avialibility to shut down most gun makers as we know if they decided too...............too scary

Having just purchased a new to me but manufactured pre sale of the company Marlin lever gun (45/70), I can tell you that the newly manufactured lever guns receive almost nothing but horrible reviews (invloving both quality control, and customer service or lack thereof).

I did considerable research before making my purchase, and joined several web sites to gather information, including one dedicated to Marlin owners and shooters. I also have a decent relationship with a custom smith that does a lot of custom work on lever guns, and he does not like to touch the new ones, preferring to buy older models used and work them up for his customers.

Grizzly Custom Guns, LLC - Custom Marlin Leverguns, Custom Scout Rifles, Custom Tactical Shotguns

Its sad because they used to have a decent reputation.

Remember the line in the movie Schindlers List, where he says (paraphrased... "This factory will never produce another working shell"? That's how I feel about these rifles. I was up till 1:00 in the morning disassembling my 338 MXLR due to stuck cases. It may have been my fault due to cycling the action a bit slow but still... Good news is some good groups @ 200 yds.

Freedom Group is like the Borg.

Meh…..fun guns, but meh. It shouldn't surprise anyone that pistol caliber lever action carbines are dying off. They were neat tech up until semi-auto carbines became available, but now given the price I would rather have a semi-auto in .45acp or 9mil.

I like fun! I've heard the cowboy action sports have driven a lot of interest towards the pistol calibers. Never more popular.

I use mine to hunt deer and elk. This one shoots a 200 grain .338 bullet with a BC of .430. It's good for elk to 400 and deer to 500. Further if you don't care about energy tables. This group was off the tailgate while working up some loads. It'll do that or better all day. Probably much better in the hands of a real marksman. With the narrow receiver and great balance, it's a dream to carry. It shoots circles around my Model 70 338 win mag Extreme Weather.

Hope Marlin/Remington/Freedom Group shakes things up and points their ships towards quality.

Thanks for that. I've heard other horror stories like yours. I'm glad all my Marlin levers are older models. I own two 336's in 30-30 and 35 Rem. An 1894S in 44 Mag and a 444S in 444 Marlin.
Stick with the old used ones, they still shoot.

I heard on the radio the other day that cerbus was going to sell freedom group because of the sandy hook murders. That is probably the only good news out of sandy hook.

I have one in 308 Marlin Express and it works great. Also have one in 30-30. No problem there. Hope things work out for Marlin.
