I'm headed to Colorado this year for elk and mule deer. Im as green as Ireland to hunting out west in mountains. I went and bought a GPS. A Garmin Oregon 450. Now I need a topo map. I have basecamp on my PC. Im thinking i want to use Basecamp to load Birdseye of the place im hunting and then layer that with topo and unit boundry lines. I seen the maps for sale on this site. Which one should I get? (BLM or Platt) ?? Is BLM the same as hunt units? I'll be hunting unit 48. I would like to see its unit boundrys.

Any help will be very appreciated. If anyone has recomendation on any areas I should hunt in 48 please PM me. I'm so new at this and cant go scout like the Eastmens :). This first hunt will be more of an experiance.

the "plat" will give Land owner names for the pvt land. If you don't want to hunt pvt the regular blm for gps will work fine. I believe both have the unit boundary lines on them.

As stated by WB, the BLM chip that just showns public versus private lands should be all you need and it's $20 cheaper. The SD microchip also comes with an insert and if you happen to have a Garmin in your vehicle like I do the microchip fits in the insert that in turn slips into the GPS. I bought one for Wyoming right from the company website and the neat thing is that you get a free upgrade the first year after you purchase it. The BLM land has nothing to do with the unit boundaries and the chip has all the animal unit boundaries on it. I'm sending mine back in for a free upgrade because Wyoming changed some unit boundaries this year.

I was going to do that with mine too but my free year is over even though I have had mine less than a year still, I think it only lasted about 4 months so now I have to pay 40 bucks :(

Still a great tool though, I don't regret the purchase one bit. I got the plat4 version.

Nimrod---I just read that free upgrade section on their website after seeing your reply because I hadn't read it close enough to see that it has to be within their calendar year and not from your date of purchase. You must have bought yours in late summer or early fall when you said you only got four months. It seems like they should have the free year start from the date of purchase if they are going to have that type of a deal. If I were you, I'd email them and I'll bet under your circumstances that maybe they'll do it for you now for free and you might even suggest to them what I mentioned since it would seem to be a good sales tool.

Hi Bob,
Thank you for your continued interest in our products! Unfortunately, you are past the one year free period for that 2011 map. You will have to pay to have that chip updated to the 2012 map version. We have made some other improvements to that chip such as being able to be read on the computer, so it will be well worth it. Details on how the update process works and the pricing can be found here.

Cheers,

Already tried that one!

That's too bad, as I thought maybe under the circumstances they might come through for you. I was going to mention what he did about the ability to use the chips through our computer now and that was one reason that I have to send mine in.

1. Pre-Loaded microSD/SD card - Simply plug card into your GPS and go

microSD/SD card Advantages
  • Very Easy to use! Simply plug the memory card into the memory card slot on your GPS and go.
  • No downloading software and messing with the computer.
  • The microSD can also be used to view the map on your computer through Garmin's BaseCamp software (for Advanced Users). View the map on your computer to help find areas to hunt or scout before you hit the ground

Will the maps on the chips come up on my PC in basecamp?

You can download a free trial version that will work on your PC with Basecamp. I couldn't get it to work with Vista but it works great with Windows 7. The trial version will give you a good feel for what you get with the chip.
