Twist Rates

I have been reading various LRH forums and often I see if this or that bullet is used in your rifle it recommends a certain twist rate. This is easy to accomodate considering a custom built rifle is generally built with a specific bullet; chamber dimensions in mind. Is there a published reference for the twist rate among manufactures? Is there a common twist rate used for the following calibres .224, .243, .284 and .308 in standard production rifles as I do not own a custom rifle.

For each manufacturer, their sites will list twists on each model. Generally their "Tactical" or "Long Range" line will have the faster twist. i.e. Remington's normal 223 rifles are 1:12; their Tactical line is 1:9.

Go to lilja barrels and his site has recomended twist rates for different bullet weights in any
given caliber.

Heavier bullets require faster twist but if you go with two much twist lighter bullets may not
work well and slower twist may not work with heavy bullets so try and pick a twist rate that
will accommodate the range of bullets you intend to use, not just one bullet.

For what you ask, most common 224 twist 9, 12, and 14. 243 9.25 and 10, 284 9.25, 9.5, and 10. 308 10 and 12.

If we're talking about building a LR rifle, then I'd go like this:

.223 - 7 or 8" twist, depending on bullet - 7" for the 80-90gr VLD bullets, and 8" for the 75gr bullets like the A-Max or VLD
.243 - 7 or 8", again, depending on bullet - 7" for the 115gr bullets, and 8" for the various 105's
7mm - 8.5-9" (if shooting a 190-195gr bullet, then 8.5 is best)
.308 - 10"
