Remington .300 RUM Brass Quality Is Exceedingly Poor: Unusable

No kidding.

Greg Tannel is sending my rifle to my as of Thursday 06/27, so I purchased two bags of .300 RUM brass from Sinclair to start with fresh brass. It arrived today. I opened the bag, pulled out a case, and was astonished to see the flash hole was visibly off center. Not just a little, but readily apparent to the naked eye.

I took the case while holding it between three fingers of my left hand and spun it slowly with my right. The hole was off center by such a degree that only the edge was in the center, the hole itself described a circle around the edge.

I went through the bag of 50 cases and found exactly ten that had centered flash holes. I am trying to think how I can set them up in my RCBS concentricity gage to determine the measurements. I believe a pin gage inserted into the hole would allow me to use a Starrett dial indicator to measure this but I do not have a flat platen to insert into my dial indicator.

I will pull out all my gages and accessories to see what I can come up with. I'll need some evidence for emailing Remington customer service to complain, and then send the brass back to Sinclair.

I should have purchased the Nosler brass.

Re: Remington Brass Quality Is Crap

I've gotten good brass from rem over the years. It is not "crap" as you so eloquently put it. It is a pretty fair product at a reasonable price. I've gotten a few 375h@h's with off-center flash holes and they fired fine, and it doesn't do a **** thing to hurt accuracy. I probably have over 1000 rounds of rem brass on hand in various cals., and it all works as well or better than the high end stuff like norma and a-square.

Well sir I am happy for you.

If I were to insert a pin gage in the flash hole and place the case in a V-block, that pin would look like a rod journal swinging around. Like I said, I am thinking of a way to measure just how off center the holes are. If I can I'll post the results.

And I just spent the last few minutes placing an order for 100 Nosler cases to compare with these and the 100 Norma cases when they get off back-order from Sinclair.

I had some bad results with Remington brass as well. I got 250 pieces of nosler brass I measured concentricity and all cases were good. Brass is supposed to be preped already but I debur again anyway. Some people say it is soft but my 300 rum likes a charge well below max so I have nothing but great results.

All I am saying is that because you got friday afternoon's brass it doesn't mean that all rem brass is crap. The nosler brass will do you well but may not take pressure quite as well as rem. My brother shoots nos in his 300 u because he couldn't get rem when he put his sendero together. I shot out a 7rum on 100 rounds of ultra brass, necked it to 30 and have been shooting it (along with another 50 30's) for another 5 years. I'd call sinclair and square up with them on the brass.

I must respectfully disagree with your assessment of the flash holes not being centered while some are not have any bearing on accuracy. The reason for this is elementary. ANY CHANGE to the way that the charge released by the primer into the propellant being ignited will indeed change the matter in which said propellant ignited. This causes a change in the pattern of ignition and it turn will cause a different pressure curve. That will translate into a change in poi, group size as well as vertical dispersion at long range.

For that matter even the firing pin shroud if it is dragging on the cocked firing pin will cause the firing pin to strike the primer with inconsistent force which will cause a variable condition which is bad for accuracy.

I never said it would be good for accuracy, ie. better. I've used rem cases like that and they still shoot sub moa groups in an 8 pound(scoped) 375h&h. The hole size matters much more than exactly where it is. I was pertified and ****ed when I got a few 375's like that, but I used them and it didn't matter. Try drilling them different diameters and it will matter a bunch. It will be more of an issue with your de-capping die than anything.
Oh, btw. a few thousandths of an inch in flash hole location variance won't change lock time a disernable abount like a bum firing pin will. So that really is an apples to oranges comparison at best.

It you don't like 'em send them back, but saying all rem brass is crap is a bit like saying all chevys or all fords are crap.

Lefty---I am a BR guy so any and All variables are bad in my game.
I gotcha. I'd be a bit steamed if I got 100$ worth of send backs too. At least he didn't get burned on a lefty rifle with a bad chamber like I did.
Have you ever done any brissance and soot testing with primers?? My father and I did many moons ago when we were trying to get a cleaner burn on our 30-30 pistols(tc). Every primer had enough gumption to toss flame the length of the 10" barrel, and they were only standard lr primers.
If a mag primer is used, it will envelop the powder with so much flame it won't really matter where it comes from other than arriving at the same time every shot. If your seating depth and flash hole diameter are similar for all rounds, there will be no real difference.
By the way, as far as cleanliness, the fed and win primers won hands down, with cci the worst and rem in the middle.

ive dealt with inconsistant remington brass a ended up selling a 338 rum for the sole reason of the brass maybe not being "junk" but you could definately see it from there. the price seems to go up every year but the quality stands fast. i currently only use norma or lapua brass and am more than happy to pay the extra.

Anyone try the Federal Brass for the 300 RUM? Bought some about 6 months ago but still running the Remy with good results. Just found my load and am afraid to use the Federal as it may change things.

In the last 10 years, I've used over 2300 new Remington .300 RUM brass for .300 RUM and .338 EDGE cartridges.None had flash holes that were off center. There were 8 in the last box of 500 that were dented on the shoulder enough that they split when expanded to .338. A phone call to Midway got a box of 20 to replace the defective ones. Great customer service! I have also used Nosler. It looks better. All the cases were neck turned. The Remington shoots the best groups in my rifles,it's cheaper, and the primer pockets last longer. I have not tried Federal or Norma. I use Lapua in 2 other rifles and really like it, but they don't shoot any better than the rifles shooting Remington brass. These rifles are customs capable of one-half moa or better. Gary
