which 7mm

I have:

Rem700 long action mag bolt face(CM)
30 " shillen select match 8 twist 7mm barrel
mcmillan a2 "on the way"

I want:

to push berger 180-195 or matrix 190 3100+fps

What case would you go with. Dakota has a wonky bolt face dimension and scattered thoughts on brass quality. 7-375 ruger seems like a lot of necking down and i dont enjoy the act of turning necks all that much. No bolt mods though. Would a 7RUM feed from a magazine with those long bullets hanging way out the mouth? Allen mag, probably too long as well and some have reservations about the lapua bolt face and a rem 700. 284 jazz. This has my attention not too much necking down, room for long bullets out the front, good brass apparently. bolt face issues? Thinking tubb bolt if factory bolt needs many mods. I just cant decide which piece of brass would be the least headache to feed from a magazine and push the bullets to the speed I want with a reasonable and consistent life. Wildcats don't bug me, kinda like them actually. Just don't want anything TOO wild. Tips from those who have gone before me are greatly appreciated. Oh this would be a hunting rifle, not a high volume practice/target rifle. Barrel life is not a major concern.

Sounds like a 7 LRM (7-375 Ruger) would fit you quite nicely. You can purchase the brass from Gunwerks already formed and properly head stamped.

For a hunting rifle the 7mm RUM is hard to beat with your action. It probably will not be a repeater with best accuracy. I load my best accuracy load and single shoot those. I seat some deeper to feed through my magazine. Those usually will be good to 500-600 yards for fast shots. Shots longer than that you have plenty of time to single load usually. That gives me the best of both worlds with the top performance cartridges.

Try a RUM case and see if it will pass through the feed rails. The few non RUM LA remingtons I tried had feed rails too narrow for the RUM case.

A 7 Rem mag with a 30" barrel and a 180 can give you approx 3050 fps. I know because I did it with mine.

Since you have an RUM action I think that solves it. You can't do any better performance wise on your action than a 7mm RUM. I have two of those and six 7mm STW's and love both. But for your action with 180-190 grain bullets The RUM case would be good. The STW not that much less with performance and better on barrels. The STW can be shot without a break by most but the RUM starts to punch a bit if that makes any difference. Lots of things to consider.

well I somehow forgot that I already have a wyatts mag box for a RUM action and a break was planned for no matter what cartridge I went with. I thought about a 7 mag but I have a number of mid intensity cartridges 30-06, 350 rem mag, 338-300WSM(on the way from a smith here), I just didn't feel like it was the step up that I am looking for with this next rifle build. Thanks for all the help.

Good choice there. The 7mm remington is a good mid level cartridge with similar performance to the 280 AI and 7mm JRS off a blown out 280 case but not going to improve anything over what you have. My 7 mm remingtons never get used because I always go with the JRS in the mid level and when I want a magnum I shoot my 7mm STW's and RUMs. Just kinda leaves the remington in no mans land. Good cartridge but the JRS does basically the same thing with less powder and recoil.

Search for the 7mm-300 Win in the google search in the top RH corner of the page, it's been outstanding with the 180 Bergers and should just rock the 195's and in the velocity range your looking for with that length barrel!!! It would take it up the notch your looking for without the abusive nature of the 7 RUM.

There are quite a few that like the 7 Mashburn at 24 campfire. It is similar to the 7mm-300 win mag in case capacity.

Search 7mm ackley magnum, there's 2 versions, the long and short, the long falls between the stw and rum in capacity and runs like the rum, its made from 300 wby or H&H brass.
