scope mount

For the little bit of entry level ELR plinking that I'm about to attempt, I can't easily justify $500 for a scope mount and/or new optics. If I get the bug, then I'll likely build a custom from the ground up.

I still need to develop a load. But, it appears that I'm going to need between 100 to 120 MOA.

I have a 20 MOA picatinny on my Sendero and my Leupold has 70 MOA (35 up/down).

So, I'm a goodly 50-70 MOA short.

I have a basic riser used for ARs that I can disect and fabricate into a fixed adapter at 50, 70, or 90 MOA as dictated by my final load.

But before I fabricate one myself, I thought I'd check here to see if anyone knows of a reasonably priced picatinny to picatinny riser/adapter that would make up the difference.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Well, here's what I'm thinking I'll do as a band-aid for now...

MFRMS Mount Rail Base $40.99
MFRMS 1" 30 MOA Riser $20.99
AR-15/M16/AR-STYLE .308 MODULAR FLATTOP RISER MOUNT SYSTEM - Brownells

From the picture, it looks like I can mill another 30-60 MOA into the riser and then mount this on my already bedded 20 MOA rail.

Might as well develop the load first to get a better estimation of how much elevation I'll need.

If your scope does indeed have 70 moa... (check it first) then either mill your existing 20 moa base to a 40 or 50 moa. Or shim and bed it to what you need for dial up. You might end up with a 500 yard zero but who cares for this project. You are simply testing. But I truely feel you could be setting yourself up for some lost accuracy. There is a reason we use the expensive bases and rings and I have proven them to be a worthwhile expense. So, please keep this in mind. You will get better accuracy if you get better mounts and a scope later. Also watch if you max the scope all the way out. In some scopes this can cause it to not come back to the zero. Also some less expensive scopes dont track true at the last few moa. I try to avoid using the last moa or two.

Thanks for the pointers.

I beleive my Leupold VX3L 6.5-20x56 claims 70 MOA total.

So, only 35 up (unverified). Plus, 20 in the existing base. Hence, 55 MOA bottomed out isn't going to get me to 2k yds with a 300wm.

I hear you loud and clear about using adapters and losing accuracy.

Now that I'm all geared up for LRH, this ELR is a whole different ball game.

What base/rings would you recommend?

Nightforce or Near base and NF rings.

I think I need to clairfy. If you shim and bed the 20 moa rail you have to be 50 or 60 moa that will get you all the 70 from the scope plus another 25 so that should put you at about 95 or so. You might even be able to machine some of it or even shim and bed more into it. The results will be a zero way out there though, with more dial up available.
