where do i start this thing?

new to this game on a budget would like a 300 wm with a mcmillan a3 adj stock and i would like to try to build it myself i like to hunt deer and elk i have been a bow hunter for awhile now thanks for any advice

You need a gunsmith to work with that has the experience neccesary. There is Alot to building a gun and tools that most people don't have.

A lot of info is left out of your post. The big question to start with is $$$ how much do you have to spend on a build ? This will determine if a build is feasable or not. Do you have a donor action to do a build with? Barrel ? or any parts to start a build with ?

if i could get a savage 110 fcp hs new for around 915.00 in 300 win mag would that be a good place to start? i think i will have another 1000.or so that i would like to split on a optics and a reloader a dillon maybe ? thanks for any advice, mark

It will be very challenging to get a complete rifle, scope and reloading set up for your budget of $2,000. I would look at all used stuff, preferably a package deal on a rifle/scope.

I suggest buying the components that you want from the start. Don't buy a $400 scope just to get going. That money will be lost when you replace it with a $1000 scope.

Look at Redding for reloading equipment. Not the cheaperst but will last a lifetime and not overly expensive.

Take it from someone with cabinets full of stuff that's been replaced/upgraded. It's cheaper to buy what you really want from the start. I'm a slow learner

Budget and McMillan don't belong in the same sentence together.

thank you thats what i thought are vortex scopes any account or does it have to be ,us optics,leupold ,nightforce ,etc ... and what kind of mount ,rings are good

In your case where money is tight I would look for a good piece of used glass leupold being the probable best buy. However, Vortex makes some good stuff as well as Nikon and probably a couple others. A Remington Sendero would be a great rifle to get you started and might just be all you ever need. Reloading is expensive to start from scratch so you'll have to save for a bit but in the meantime you could have a great shooting rifle to practice with. In my case I have a rifle that will get me by for now. I'm in the process of acquiring all my reloading equipment. Once I get the reloading up and running I'll have a full custom built. Best of luck!

thank you for the info ,i do have a friend that has a rcbs and shoots 300 win mag i guess ill go for the better scope for now and just bug him when i start reloading thanks again mark.

There's a real nice sendero 300wm for sale in the LRH Classifieds now, and several other's that would be a great way for anyone on a budget to get off to a good start.

Sticking with common factory rounds like the 300wm, 7mm Rem Mag, 7mm STW and 300 RUM are also good ways to go for the guy on a budget since both factory ammo and components are easy to come by.

As for the McMillan, well one can start with whatever factory stock you have and over time as budget allows go for the really good stuff one item at a time.
