Which scope should I use?

Hi all, I am new to long range shooting and got into it because I bought a .30-378 and heard about its long range potential. Here is my problem, I have decent glass on the rifle at the moment w/ a Leupold Vari-XIII 4.5-14x50 with a duplex reticle with the short turrets. Can this scope be used effectively for 600-1000 yard shots? I have a Nikko Sterling Nighteater 4.5-16 but it has larger turrets and a range finding reticle, I know this isnt a high quality glass but Ive heard good things. I know investing in new glass is ideal but im on a college student budget..

If I were in your boat I'd sell the Stirling and put M1 turrets on the leupold along with either a mildot or TMR reticle.

Will it work at 1,000yds? 14x is the minimum I'd consider for that range and it will depend on the size of your target.

The other way to go would be to sell them both and move up to the Leupold 6-20x50 with either target or tactical turrets and one of the above recommended reticles or perhaps the fine target dot.

They can be had used reasonably. The stirling is liable to come apart within just a few rounds.

Cheap scopes on big magnums usually come to a rapid and ugly end.

Keep in mind they grow 'em big in Alaska.


Use what you have than you'll start getting a better understanding of what you'll need.
