Water Buffalo?

I won a water buffalo hunt and need to figure out a rifle. The hunt is in March of 2013 and need to piece everything together. The hunt is going to take place on game ranch here in Texas and the shot will be around 100 yards. The guy that gave away the hunt will be hunting with me with a big bore 500 something, as back up.


1. Use my 300wsm with a 220gr bullet.

2. Put together a 338LM and use 250gr or 300gr bullets.

3. Put together a 375 H&H.

If your planning on going to africa ever, then go .375 H+H or bigger ( I would go .378Wby or .416 something). If you're like me and realisticly wont go to the Dark Continent use what you have or put together that .338 LM so that you'll use it here.

If you use a the .300 Win or build a Lapua I would go with Swift's or barnes of some flavor.

Is it a Water Buffalo or a Cape Buffalo?

The water buffalo is smaller and easier to kill than the Cape Buffalo. a .300 or better will kill
the water buffalo but for the cape buffalo you will need at least a 375 for quick kills. of
course a bigger rifle will allways be a safe bet.

Most water buffalo will weigh up to 1500 pounds . the big Cape Buffalo will exceed 2000
pounds.

Call the ranch and find out the size of the biggest Buffalo they have and base your rifle
needs on that. Look for at least 2500 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards and use well comstructed
bullets like the Swift A Frame.

Just borrow a .375, 45/70, or 458wm.

For that matter borrow a 300wm, 338 or 300 Rum from someone on the board.

If you are going to do this hunt over near Jacksboro, let me know and I'll do the loaning.

^^^^ Shame on me for considering myself a Savage Fan, I didn't know that was available, i'd like to try that out (I have the Ruger Hawkeye in 375R). The 375 Ruger would be a good choice for sure. But if we're talking about a 1500 lb buff you really won't need it (per say). I live very close to a few buffalo/bison ranches (I think RBL closed), there were a lot of 2k lb'ers taken with the ole' 45-70 & 45-90. There's a lot to be said about a big slow bullet..... there are also some taken with the 300wm, although the video I viewed was less than impressive as the big bull literally shrugged off several rounds at meager distance... you could actually see the hide twitch as if being bitten by a bug... didn't even quit eating until blood from the lungs was coming out. I do have a personal acquaintance who used a 325WSM to good results on the "once in a lifetime, WY lisenced hunt".

My vote is for DIAMETER over velocity, 338 or bigger.... I just happen to have a Ruger #1 in 458 Lott sitting here with buff written all over it

Not to mention, you now have an excuse to build/buy another rifle! How can you loose!

One other suggestion.

Carry plenty of Ice chest. There is a lot of very good meat on a buffalo.

375H&H with 300 grain barns x bullet they have been killing the biggest animals on the planet for 100 years with that cal. I love It it by no means Is a long range gun and for heavy dangerous game you want to stay away from high velocity rounds like 378 weatherbys 375 ultra mags etc. I have a 500 nitro express that launches a 570 grain at 2100 f.p.s and that kills like you would not beleve . Shot placement is key but I am sure you know that I know guys that shot elephant and never recovered them and they used 500 and 600 nitro dubblerifles gun)
