Savage 22-250 groups?

I have a Savage 22-250 11 fcns 22" sporter barrel with a 4-16 monarch on top, caldwell bi pod. i can seem to get 1" groups at 100 and obviously cant get 3" groups at 300 its close but not what i think it should. shot 50-55 hornadys, 55 rem core loked and get about the same results.... any ideas are welcome, dont like the idea of moly but hear it can help groups?? Not into reloading so thats outta the question

Since you do not reload you are fairly limited. Keep in mind some guns just will not shoot under MOA. A reloader has access to variables that we rarely can not get a known accurate cartridge to shoot something 1/2 or less. I have heard really good things about Black Hills as well as the new hornady superformance. Keep in mind I have only read about these as I have been rolling my own for over 20 years. Maybe someone else will chime in here. I can tell you many times when buying factory ammo you get what you pay for. The ones you mentioned trying are not praised for accuracy. more like burning and plinking.

If you're not going to reload, and want to keep your sporter setup, maybe at least consider having:

1 The bore polished/lapped
2 Trigger pull reduced as low as possible.
3 Bed job..
4 Have a smith look at your crown to make sure its concentric.
5 keep trying out more factory ammo until you find the most consistent and accurate brand of the bunch.

These things should help get the most out of your setup without reloading or spending more money to get a custom barrel, etc.

All good advice. I will add that contrary to popular belief NOT all Factory Savages will shoot .5 ALL DAY LONG. I have found savages like a little fouling in the barrel.

Very true...mine certainly didnt at first..the bore was so rough that I could'nt run a 22 caliber cotton round patch through it while cleaning. I could only fit a smaller square cotton patch through it. Only after I polished the bore with Flitz could I get the round patch through on a jag..Still stiff but worlds better.

Before my current rifle I bought a Savage VLP 22-250 that had a serious factory defect just past the bore...seriously deep chatter mark on that rifle's bore. Took it back for an exhcange.

The purpose of moly is to allow more shooting between barrel cleaning. I think it's highly unlikely that it will improve groups.

Many, actually probably most, firearm and ammo manufacturers consider 1 inch at 100 yards acceptable accuracy. If you can consistently get that with factory ammo, you're doing well. In the 22-250s I've had, Remington loads have proved very satisfactory but, if they're not doing as well as you like and you don't reload, you'll have to try some other brands.

Checking the crown, bore, scope attachments, having a trigger job are all good ideas and if a problem is found could help you.

Like me, since you don't reload, the cheapest and easiest thing to do is to try many different factory loads until you hopefully find one that your rifle likes. This is my first post and I am in no way an expert, but that is what I have had to do with each of my rifles to get the most accurate bullet. The unfortunate thing is that what I have spent on quality ammo in that search, I could have already purchased all the necessary equipment. I usually go through 4 to 6 boxes of different brands at $35 to $50 a box until I get what I want. I have been able to achieve sub MOA with all rifles except a Remington 700 SPS tactical that is about 1 MOA. Still may reload one day. The idea of 1/2 MOA is appealing.

Another item that you could do is purchase a Limbsaver Harmonics device that slides over the barrels. I put one on my 300RUM that was shooting 1.5 MOA and took it to .75 MOA at 100 yards. It is interesting to see what it does to the best loads you choose.

I found my best factory ammo for 22-250 in my gun was the white box winchester with 45 grain hp.

Yes, the Winchester 45 grain white box is the only round mine has fired....1/2" groups, inexpensive, good hunting round, no need to try anything else!
