?? 270 wby mag??

Hey guys, im looking for some opinions on the 270 wby mag. I had picked this one up about a year ago and im thinking about dragging it along for the backcountry hunt.

What are your experences with this caliber?

Any advice on a bullet weight? It'll be used for elk and deer.

Factory ammo comes in 140 Accubond or 150 Partition - both excellent choices. Depending on personal preference I'd go for one of these and see which one shoots the best. Or, buy both and see which one your rifle shoots better.

If you're loading yourself then I'd probably pick the Accubond in 140 or consider the 150gr Berger. Note that with the longer freebore of a Weatherby you may have a bit harder of a time getting that Berger to work well, as it will take some experimentation.

Factory loads show it "about" 100 fps faster than the 270 WSM.

I would not hesitate to use it for elk or deer.

I was thinking about the 150 gr bergers or 150 gr hornady sst's. Has anyone had good luck with the sst's.

I was always told to set it from the lands by seating a bullet barely in the casing and shutting the bolt. Then you know exactly where your lands are and to se it .010 to .015 back. Is that the proper way?

I don't own a 270 weatherby Mag but an easy way to find the lands is use one of those 3 peice cheap cleaning rods. Grind off the end of a cleaning jag. Put the bullet in from the chamber end and use something to hold it firmly into the lands. Run the cleaning rod through the barrel until you bottom out on the bullet. Make a mark on the cleaning rod. Then remove the bullet and close bolt. Put rod into end of the barrel until you make contact with bolt face. Make a mark on the cleaning rod. Then you can measure the marks and that will tell you where to set your bullet.

I have a MK5 270 WBY Mag and have had great success with it. My current load is Federal 210M primer, powder 67 gr. IMR 7828, 140 gr Nosler Accubond, OAL 3.420". I am looking for my target, but I want to say with ths load it was the best group I ever shot. If I recall, it was in the low .3's! I would like to get it chronographed and see where it falls. I ran the numbers on my JBM and out to 800 yards, about 13.25 moa, 2034 FPS, and 1286 fpe. This was with a 200 yard zero and a muzzle velocity of 3300 FPS. I would like to order a box of the Matrix 165's and see how they shoot! I have heard good things about them.

I was going to use it for a donor rifle for a custom build, however, it means a lot to me, so I decided to hold on to it. I sold the leupold which was on it, so I will be in the market for a new scope at some point. I was looking at the Talley Rings, they look pretty nice. I was also looking at the pierce engineering rings with built in moa. Maybe make it into a nice carry gun for bear!

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Can never hear enough about shooting/hunting stories!

I want to work up a load with the 150 bergers but if i can get the same accuracy with my with the 140 gr bal. Tip or accu i might just use that i have a box of them sitting on my reloading bench.

The thing thats really nice about the bal. tips and the accu. is that the have the same exact b.c. and they shoot the exact same.

So you can sight in with the cheapo balliatic tips and hunt with your accubonds.

At your 3.420 oal are you to the lands yet or is yours a custom rifle.

I can not remember off the top of my head how far off the lands they are. I can load them into the magazine.
