Want an AR15, what's the best out of box?

Well, I'm going to buy an AR, but with so many names and features out there it's making me dizzy. I have never owned one, but I have fired my buddy's LMT AR15.
I am looking for this gun to be reliable and reasonably accurate. I plan on putting my Nikon red dot sight on it that I currently have on my .357mag.
Not really looking to do long range work with it. I have my long range gun for that. I also am not interested in a really long barrel.

Thanks for the reply. I will definitely give it a look. Seems like there are a bazillion of those things everywhere. I want to go ahead and get mine in case the prices skyrocket nearing the elections this fall.

I should start by saying there is no best but there is a standard MIL SPEC you will see it claimed but only the compaines below deliver. Pick any rifle from the following companies and you will be good to go for life. LMT, Daniel Defence, Noveske, Colt, BCM, knights armerment.

Any other maker is just a cheep copy and they dont use the same materials or manufacturing standards the goverment calls for in the data package for the M4 or M16 series of rifles.

If you want to build you own any stripped lower thats in spec will do as long as you fill it with a quality lower parts kit (LPK) and top it out with mil spec parts from companies of known quality.

The BCM website has the most options and they sell all the companies I mentioned another good source is G&R tactical Grant the owner is a good guy he has great prices and a lot of great deals like colt rifles under 1k.

You will here a lot of guys say it does not matter and there is no diffrence between a colt and a bushmaster but let me tell you from first hand experience there is a hugh diffrence in quality. Buy once cry once no hobby guns for me. Start with a base model and add parts as you learn to run the weapon. Buy upgrades based on need not looks.

I will make a few suggestions on rifle choice. If your looking at a 16" barrel get a mid length gas system it has a longer dwell time a less recoil impulse. Whats that mean faster more accurate follow up shots. I personaly prefer a 14.5" barrel and a pinned and welded flash supressor it is lighter than the 16" barrel. Additionaly we make body shots at 800M all the time with our issued M4 carbines in the ARMY so the accuracy is there.

Jon, what do u think about RRA? They have the operator series for 1000 that comes pretty loaded. Several shops sell them for around 969.00. I have shot my friends recently and was very impressed. I dont have the experience that you do however. Whats your thoughts?

Rock River builds a good AR our department has them and have had no issues with them
and ordering parts they have been very good about getting what we need.......

I've got a couple RRAs in different configurations, though most are set up as competitive Service Rifles. Good guns, and a very reasonable price. As Nomad alluded to, they're doing several govt contracts and have been chosen by a number of agencies out there.

Specify on precisely what you want the rifle for, and we should be able to dial in a little closer on what might serve you best.

They have no current goverment contracts to my knowledge? Additional most cops are not gun guys so a lot of PDs have made poor and un informed decsions with there local tax payers money is concerned.

All they hobby guns may serve you fine but he asked for the best and RRA is not it and the prices are so close why would you buy one when when you can have a colt, bcm for around the same price?

I did my time with the hobby guns before I knew better and its a road I will never travel again there is no subsitute for quality.

They are being used by Govt. and you might be surprised at some of the talent on a Govt. range. Some high speed training offered if you like shooting and want it.

I have a few AR's and they work fine for my intended use. From what I have been exposed to the operator series from RRA looks like a great value. I dont have the experience with them like some of the guys that have replied so I didnt want to just recommend it to the op. I figured I would just bring it up as an option for the op, so of the more experienced could advise the op if it was one he should take a look at. Thank u to all that have replied

I am not interested in spending more for an AR than I did my fully outfitted long range gun, so I want to keep the cost at or below $1000.
From doing more research I am leaning heavily towards the Colt 6920, but I still have not made up my mind yet.
I have heard good things about Bushmaster in the past, but from what I have been reading lately it looks like they are more on the lower to middle end of quality. Seems the same for DPMS as well, but again I don't know for sure.
This gun will more than likely be a two hundred yard and in gun. I have no desire to fit quality optics on a gun with a 16inch barrel, so I will just put a red dot on it as I have one that I think would work fine.

Throwing my hat in Im going with Bushmaster I have 2 and my dad has 1, never had any problems with any of the guns some people say BMs are junk but I will put my Bushy against any brand any day. I handload for mine and get under .3" groups. Ive never seen the cost to use advantage of buying LMT, Noveske or the SUPPOSED higher end guns if your gonna use it to punch paper, kill deer, groundhogs, varmints etc. etc. save your money and get some other play toys. Buy a run of the mill AR and have fun. I payed under $900 for all my Bushys and know people that have done the same.
