I am underway on my 50bmg build but could do with some build advice.

Due to being in England I couldnt get the BAT EX action I wanted - instead I have got hold of a Barnard GP for New Zealand which comes complete with match trigger.

For the stock - I have a Mc Millan 'Big Mac' on the way which I intend to use with a heavy duty bipod I have already bought.

Has anyone advice on the barrel specification?

I was thinking along the lines of 36" 1 in 12 twist with a Steyr muzzle brake

I was thinking about using English made 'Border Barrels' as I have used them for other builds with sucess. The only thing is the smith is to supply the uncut blank as I wanted 36" & Border can only go to 32" with what they have - this worries me a little if I'm honest.

Another option was 'Walther' but my smith said they were hard on reamers and was not very keen on using them.

Is it allowed to export .50 cal barrels from the United States if I am civilian end user - I couldnt export an action does that apply to barrels?

Call Dan Lilja of Lilja and see if he will ship you 1.

He makes lots of 50 cal. barrels for the milatry and I think he will go to 45" long.

There are other section of the forum for this kind of amateur hour questions.

Apologies - I wanted advice to build a 1000 - 2000 yards competition 50 bmg for UK FCSA competitions / field range meets.

Ive shot out to 1200 yards with my 6.5x284 (so I'm not that green) but want a big hammer for fun & light competition - please point out the best pages for new comers to the forum to ask for this kind of advice from longrange 50 cal shooters?!

off topic, sorry but i thought firearms were outlawed in England?

Handguns are banned unless you have a special exemption for dispatching wounded deer at close ranges (For example when deer are hit by cars on the road)
Rifles are highly regulated - you have to demonstrate you are a fit & proper person as well as the need for each rifle. (This could be for example a .22 for rabbits, a .243 for deer etc. You can also have rifles for target shooting but have to be part of a club or association).
Thanks for the reply - but I think I should have posted my original message on the Gunsmithing page. Sorry if I have tied up this page with the wrong conversation.

lilja and mc millan make 2 of the best on the market. i wouldnt use that clam shell brake. you will need at least a 30 pound rifle. it was developed for artillery. the KDF and newer type brakes are the best. my 50 is 15 pounds w/o scope but with a short 33 in barrel.
