Need scope mounting suggestions

I would like to get some input from anyone who would care to help out a newbie to long range shooting. I have recently purchased my first long range caliber rifle and would like some help with scope mounting. I am thinking about going with a 20 MOA rail as opposed to rings. Any thoughts, concerns, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Here is the rifle:

Remington 700
Sendero (not fluted)
7mm Mag

Also, any suggestions for a preferred factory load would be helpful as well until I get in to the hand loading aspect of this new hobby. Thanks in advance everyone.

You still need rings unless the rail and rings are integreated. The rail mounts the rings and the rings mount the scope and the rings will need to be lapped true in relationship to their secured position on the rail (and to remove any high spots and allow full ring to tube contact).

When you see scopes for sale that are listed with 'light ring marks', that's from mounting without lapping.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I understand I will need rings as well as the rail was just wanting to know what would be the preferred setup (rings directly to gun or rings to rail). And any suggestions on manufacturers for either would be great as well. Thanks.

I have two Remington 700 Senderos chambered in 7mm STW with Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP EBR-1 MOA Reticle scopes on each of them. The set-up I use on each of them is a 20 MOA EGW for the Picatinny rail and low Burris 30mm Tactical Rings. They seem to hold pretty well with the recoil and with the 20 MOA rail I can dial it out to over 1,400 yards if I want.

I also have a Remington 700 LSS chambered in a .257 Weatherby Magnum also with a Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP EBR-1 MOA Reticle scope on it too. The set-up I use on that rifle is Talley Lightweight 2-Piece Scope Mounts with Integral 30mm Rings (Matte Medium). I really like that set-up on that rifle too. With the set-up on this rifle I can dial it out to about 1,000 yards if I want.

What about the best of both worlds? Pierce engineering makes ringmounts (like tally looking one piece mounts) that have 20moa cut into them. Cheaper than going with a good rail and good rings. Less points to fail also.

Warne makes a 20MOA steel base, that is decent quality, and it's cheaper than buying a Badger or Leupold rail. Don't get me wrong, aluminum is nice, but steel (to me) is preferable if you can afford it. If you want something really good, get a Murphy Precision rail .

If you are going with a rail, i suggest looking at a NEAR Mfg rail. Richards stuff is top shelf. You wont regret is. I've had 4 and for all the mil and gov they produce, You'll almost always speak to the owner himself.

Are you working with a budget? I have several setups I like:

Rem 700 SA- MK4 20moa base ($130.00-ish) & low Burris XTR's ($60-ish)
Caliber- Lazzeroni Patriot

Rem 700 LA- NightForce Direct Mount 20moa ($200.00) One piece base & rings.
Caliber- 6-284

Rem 700 LA- Badger 20moa base (8-40 screws) ($135.00) & American Rifle Company 34mm Rings ($200.00). Most expensive setup, but easily the strongest.
Caliber- 338RUM

BTW, Talley also produces their one piece ting mounts in 20 MOA height differential.

I tend to use Warne myself, or Ralley for reduced recoil. Hard to beat Warne on a heavy recoil firearm.

No matter what ring set, be sure to line-align them and lap them.
