Just found out that I drew a great New Mexico elk tag. I would usually be safe and take my 338.....BUT....my gunwerks 6.5x284 just came in and I am dying to use it on something this year. Since this is my only hunt, I am in a quandary.

What do you guys think?

No pics yet...10 day waiting period in Cali. I went in to sign for it. They let me check it out...then took it back!:(. Do they think I ordered a gun six months ago to "take someone out"? I think the "in the heat of the moment" passed long ago....crazy

A NM tag huh:>
I know your itching to use that new rifle but, That good old 338 will Never let you down! and a tag like that doesn't come along very often! That 338 hits um HARD!

Wow, this is crazy! Everytime I hear someone say the 338, I nod my head....with a little regret. Then the next post is like "go for it, no problem"....and I nod with a little smile. Obviously, the 338 is the better choice overall. I bought it for elk and moose in the first place! The 6.5 is capable under good circumstances. Wow, this is going to end up being a game time decision! Probably going to take the 6.5, but still feeling a little conflicted. Problem is that I've never really shot anything with less than a 300 mag. That "cute" little 6.5 shell makes me wonder:rolleyes

That "cute" little 6.5 will ballistically put it all over a 338wm. The 338wm is a joke, its good for mid range or short range bear hunting, but it doesn't have a set big enough to push the good 338 bullets of 250grns or more, **** its a necked up 7mm rem mag!

JUST SOME FIGURES:

6.5 x 284, 140 gr @ 2950fps, 1748 ft/# @ 300 yd.

300Win Mag. 200 gr. @ 2960fps, 1600ft/# @ 625 yds.

how does the 6.5 "whip up on the 338" when it comes to big bulls ?

I'm not sure what bullet you are rating, at but my 6.5x284 is equivalent T 600 yards to your 338, 600 yard energy, and out runs the 338 past that.
