I am building a long range bolt action hunting rifle based off a REM 700 action, chambered in 300 RUM. I have a JAE stock and nightforce optics, but currently am using the stock REM SPS barrel. I am looking to upgrade the barrel to 28-30in barrel so I can truly reach out and touch something. I am looking for an outstanding barrel, preferably carbon wrapped to increase strength and reduce weight as it is already a heavy rifle. I am new to piecing rifles together so i am looking for any recommendations as well as gunsmithing options/pricing.

IMO stay away from carbon wrapped barrels - for every good one there seems to be 100 bad ones!

Personally, I'd skip the carbon wrap. Go with a Brux #6 fluted, or similar. You can contact me for pricing. Or, visit my website.

Proof Research is a reputable carbon wrapped source. They build complete rifles as well.

Luck with your project.

I agree skip the carbon wrap. More hype than anything. Number 6 fluted would make a nice longrange hunting weight rig. Set her in a Mcmillan, weight should be about right. Or if you go 7mm you could drop to a #5 Fluted. It would be real practical and pleasant to carry and shoot. Spend your money on other stuff not the High priced Fishing pole aka carbon wrapped barrel.

If you are looking for weight reduction as a main goal, and dont mind the cost of barrel at 2-3 times a conventional. Then I would look into a ABS wrap.Bettin customs is a sister company and does their own wraps, same for Proof Research Firearms.

I'm running two ABS barrels with Satern liners in a 6.5 WBY and 300 RUM and both are extremely good shooters. Easy to clean too.

I was told by a known custom rifle builder that carbon fiber barrels actually get hotter internally than a regular barrel. They found this in testing. I have no interest in carbon fiber barrels.

I do not recomend them ether.

It is just another element that can cause problems.

There are other ways to save weight without sacrificing accuracy potential.

You are using one of the heaviest scopes on the market and it is a very good one,but
there are other good ones that don't weigh near as much (Some are as much as 2 pounds
lighter).

If weight is a problem spend the money on Carbon Graphite stocks and scopes under 2 pounds.

I personally like the advantage of a heaver barrel and rifle combination. They are more consistant,
heavy barrels are more forgiving to different loads and the heaver rifles are a steadier platform to
shoot from especally at long distances.

My mountain rifle (Elk Hunting) weighs 13.5 pounds and is worth the extra Carry weight when
making offhand shots or in windy conditions.

Just my opinion
