How much do you really gain with a 338/300 RUM over the standard 338RUM in a 28" tube?

For what it's worth, I've frequently read that an aprox 100 ft/sec gain can be expected depending on bullet weight and powder used. Sorry that I don't have any first hand experience with the 338 Edge to share.

Thanks - I have a friend that wants a 338/300RUM (I DO NOT call it an "edge" as I have had several rifles chambered in 338/300 RUM before it was called that). I suggested the standard 338 RUM. My thinking is in a 28" tube the 338/300 RUM would just waste powder and would need more barrel to take advantage of the extra powder capacity. I'm sure one could mitigate this by running a faster powder but to what end.

Am I off on my thinking? Is there any advantage?

i had a "edge". i prefer to call it a 338/300 myself. i now am in the works of a 338 rum. I don't think the 50fps adv increase in velocity is worth the wildcat.

my main reason is i want a factory caliber that is head stamped for the bullet diameter im truely using. its just personal preference to me.

i got 2800fps adv with 91gr H1000 in a 30" tube rem 700.

I went with the 338 RUM for the same reason. Head stamped brass is a big deal to me also.

Wiki, shows 338 LA=114 GR.338 rum=113,and Edge =110,h20. I think it is going to depend more on your barrel and build than the cartridge. I have seen Norma listed at 106,mine is 108 h2o. And I have noticed that compared to many Savage 338 la on this site I shoot same velocity with less powder, that is across Oehler.

The two cartridges give the same performance so that is not your decision. You are not going to gain anything over the other in any length barrel. When the 338 RUM came out in 2001 I tested it head to head with several different barrels with the 338-300 RUM I had been doing since 1998. Same thing performance wise concerning accuracy or velocity.

Your decision is do you want a wildcat or factory cartridge. After the 338 RUM came out in 2001 and guys could shoot both at my range everyone went with the 338 RUM. No need the expense and trouble of wildcatting when a factory cartridge does the same thing.

I agree - I think people get wrapped up in all the hype that surrounds "wildcatting", it's happened to me.

I actually own both now started with the edge in a 28" pipe would swear you could fill it half with sawdust and shoot great. My gunsmith told me it was a sweet chambering and i have to agree. Now i have a factory 338 rum i put on a de brake, basix trigger and B&C stock. Im sticking with the sierra 250 grain bt spitzer and getting some awsome groups with it using 96 grains of H-1000. I had trouble first day out working loads from 95-97 grains shooting 1.5- 1 3/4 groups. I came home seated the bullet out farther, changed rest, and beared down got a group at .318, .900, and .605. Im very happy with that for a factory barrel. I am hesistant to try the 300 thinking i might have to much barrel wip. I plan on taking it to Co. this fall as a Lr carry rifle.

My 28 inch barreled 338 edge is shooting 300 gr SMK 2880fps well under 1/2 MOA with no pressure signs. I use RL 25 powder. My 26 inch barreled 338 ultra shoots the same bullet at 2750 fps.

The 338 ultra and 338 edge do not give exactly the same performance. The edge has a advantage. Not alot but it is there.

Is your rum a factory rifle? What is your load with R-25? I jst thought the 300 may be too much for the smaller taper factory rifle.
