Another dog victim of 22 Mag...

I was at my Kansas hunting property a couple of weeks ago mending fences and burning CRP when I decided to go down in one of the hardwood draws to look for morel mushrooms. I always carry some kind of firearm because we kill every coyote we see. I was easing through the draw when I heard my land partner at the other end of the draw on the UTV. I decided he may send something my way up the dry creek bed so I cozied up to an elm tree and waited...a whole 30 seconds and there is a big coyote headed right at me using the creek bed. It gets to about 15 yards coming right at me and stopped...winded me but never saw me. Dropped her with the Rem 597 HB 22 mag using Hornady Critical Defense Ammo, 45g FTX. I love shootin' coyotes.

Well done. I'll have try my 22mag more often on coyote. It's that or the .270. Just have to be patient enough to get them in close enough.

Yeah, I limit my 22 mag to 100 yards on coyotes. Most have been taken at 50 or less. With a good rest I can consistently put 3 shots into an area the size of a quarter. I recently found out that the Hornady Critical Defense ammo is very accurate out of my rifle and that the 45g bullet is devastating on coyotes.

Yeah, I limit my 22 mag to 100 yards on coyotes. Most have been taken at 50 or less. With a good rest I can consistently put 3 shots into an area the size of a quarter. I recently found out that the Hornady Critical Defense ammo is very accurate out of my rifle and that the 45g bullet is devastating on coyotes.

I had a nice steady shot at a yote from about 80 yards with my Savage FV (22mag). Hit him square where his lungs/heart are. He took off and I could not find him. Was using Fiocci 40g HP. I didn't feel I had enough time to take a headshot. I like the idea of a heavier bullet. Is the Critical Defense an HP? What is it about it that's new/different? At one time I was totally against using a 22mag on coyote. But since they insist on taking out my goats, I no longer give a ****. I'll shoot them with anything.

The Hornady rounds were designed for pistols and to penetrate heavy clothing. Just an opinion, but I think the bullet gets better penetration than a regular HP and it carries that extra 5g of bullet. The one in the photo above I shot head on in the chest...ran 10 yards and piled up dead.
