This site is costing me Money=customizing

it's all the fault of the folks on this site.

First it was switching which stock from Stockade I'm going to get, now it's pricing up multiple new barrels and a new bolt so I can make my rifle into a heavy barrel switch barrel rifle, and upgrading my bolt handle.

Looking at getting 2 McGowen barrels one in .308 to replace my factory barrel, and another one in 300WSM to make my rifle into a real switch barrel rifle, one that I can hunt with at longer range.

anyone have any suggestions/advice on doing this? The rifle is a Savage 11 that I have been slowly turning into my own creation.

Not hardly! You just gotta look at it differently. Look how much your equipment has improved, & how far your range has been extended by being coaxed out of your comfort zone by fellow members on this site.... Trust me, if you look at it $$$ wise you'll just cry.

Not hardly! You just gotta look at it differently. Look how much your equipment has improved, & how far your range has been extended by being coaxed out of your comfort zone by fellow members on this site.... Trust me, if you look at it $$$ wise you'll just cry.

My title was supposed to be tongue in cheek...guess it didn't work. This site has really gotten me to think about stretching how far I can take my .308, and also making it into 2 rifles in 1 with buying 2 barrels and another bolt. Never thought I'd find it this addictive...I also just bought my first reloading set up so I can start making rounds specifically for my rifle. Hopefully will finally get it out past 2oo yards this summer. My goal is actually to have a 300 yard zero, so I can shoot out to that distance with minimal adjustment, but still have enough to take my .308 out to 1k for shooting targets, if I want

Here's an idea, but kind of defeats the purpose of the barrel nut. But I like the concept and has got my creative juices flowing. I saw on accurateshooter.com where a guy used Savage actions for this setup. However, he mates the barrel to the action just like any other action. He sets the heads spacing off the bolt head and sets the threads accordingly. The difference is that cuts a hex nut type slots on the end of the barrel. He can put a wrench on the flats at the end of the barrel and screw them in and out at will never needing to set his head space again. All he has to do is then change bolts to match what ever caliber barrel he screws on. I wish I could find the article, but it is eluding me at the moment.

Great...now the barrel list is up to 3 possible brands...Looking at McGowen, Shilen, and Criterion,

Just did the total cost on the rifle so far:

Rifle: $460
Stock:$260
Buckmasters scope: $300
EGW base: $40
Weaver Rings: $32
Trigger: :75

Total: $1167

Figure another $300 for the barrel when I decide on that


LOL...good thing it's all on My Cabela's card and I get Estatements the wife doesn't see.


Any opinions on the barrels?

Criterion have a good following. You may want to look into Lothar Walther. That is what I run. They use a 550 stainless which is harder than the 416SS they use here in the states. It's made in Germany. Takes 6-8 weeks to come in. Obermyer is another to look into.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check them out. LOL, I'm not sure about Criterion, because I've only seen Stainless bbls from them, and with a Blued action, I want a matching BBL, but that's not really a problem...just me deciding on how I want the rife to look

Most of these manufacturers offer Chromoly blued barrels. Obermyer is used by the military for their rifles. You could always use Dura-kote or Krylon to make it all look the same.

If you get this part done add up the total cost to that point and start saving at least that much again for optics, LRF, etc....

LOL, totally forgot...Jeez, I'm going to Krylon the new stock. Jeez total brain fart on my part

yeah, going to add a ACI, a level, and then, in the future, a Nightforce NXS....as well as a new bolt and 300WSM barrel to make the the thing a true switch barrel, then a LRF later on

Okay...pretty much decided on a 24" McGowen bbl, going to decide on contour today, not totally decided between light varmint of heavy sporter. one thing I was wondering, 90% recessed crown or 11 degree angled crown. Also, I'm going to start loading 178 gr A-Max bullets, was thinking 1:10 or 1:11 twist for the new barrel, any thoughts?

I would go 1:10 in case you get the urge to shoot some heavies some time. The 1:11.25 is the military standard. It will work well with all bullet weights up to 200grn. You won't be disappointed in the 178 A-max. I played with it quite a bit a few years ago. I got some really good groups with them at short range, but that was when I was still teething on precision reloading. I could probably do better now. 11 degree crown should be all you need. Someone with a little better knowledge on that subject should chime in. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with your barrel choice and bullet choice. My problem is a choose a bullet, and then I start choosing other bullets, and before I know it, I have a shelf full of different bullets!! I'm so indecisive! I would have your barrel finish at .815-.875 at the muzzle. That should be about 2- 3# barrel. So figure that into your final build weight.

Thanks! I was looking at a little smaller diameter when I was considering a 26 inch bbl, but I think at 24 inches I can afford a little bigger.

I like the A-Max because, they shoot well for me in factory ammo and, according to the reloading manual, they will work on medium game, so I'll be able to use the same bullets for everything I do
