338 RUM... What would YOU do?

Alright guys,
here's the project... I have a *Factory* Remington LSS 338 rum LEFTY. My ultimate goal for this rig is to kill Elk at ranges out to 1000 yards, and target shoot out way past that.
YOUR MISSION SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT... Budget $1500. What would YOU build??? Scope (no illuminated recticles, Idaho doesnt allow it), base, rings, etc.
I need it to hold up to the 300gr berger or SMK.gun)
My Idea so far... Vortex Viper HS LR 6-24x50 FFP, egw 20moa base, burris XTR rings, Muzzle break.
You guys are the pro's so give your opinions.
What would you do?

Well first, I would ditch the factory stock and get a full length bedded stock from grey bull precision or the like. Ditch the factory trigger ang get a timney or Jewell trigger. FFP (for what you are doing, you dont need FFP) scopes are more expensive than the SFP ones so I would save myself some cash and get the vortex with the SFP. I would also get it to a smith and have him put a muzzle brake on it if it doesn't already. After I wore that barrel out, I would send it to a smith and have a custom barrel put on it and have the action trued.

Grey bull precision stock: $350

Jewell trigger: $210

CSR or Pain killer muzzle brake w/smith work: $225

That leaves me $700 to $800 for a new vortex SFP scope.

Edited: didn't notice that you still have to buy the 20 MOA base and rings. Soooo, I would get all the stuff above and while I was waiting for the gun to get back from the smith, I would save my money and get the base and rings.

Bed it, brake it, tune trigger, pinned scope rail. Develop load. Your scope will work. I like the vortec FFP's.

bed it for sure, if recoil is too much brake it, tune the trigger. I would step up to the Vortex PST line, Ive looked at both and I went with the PST.

I really like the PST, but Idaho doesnt allow illuminated recticles. Thats why I was thinking of going with the HS LR. Do you guys think the EGW and XTR base and rings will hold up to the recoil?

I can't tell you anything on the Vortex scopes, I've never used one. I initially ran XTR's on my 338RUM & they held just fine, albeit mine is 16lbs w/brake. I'm not a huge fan of EGW equipment, but they are cheap.

Bed the stock you have, ensure your barrel is floated. You should be able to tune the trigger you have to an accepable level. I'd probably go ahead & brake it now.

I thought that you could get the PST in a non-illuminated reticule? if not that kinda sucks, there a heck of alot of scope for the money. I dont think that I would go for the HS, Im not sure that they're made for repeatable dialing.. but thats just a guess.

thinking about it, you will probably want to break it too even if you can handle the recoil, its nice to be able to spot your shots.

It would seem to me leaving the battery at home would make you legal. It's what I do, and back in for states or seasons it is legal.

FYI Last fall Idaho changed there regs to read: no electronic devise EXCEPT for lit reticles. So it is a non issue either way. you are fine even with a fully functioning reticle.

Probably not, but it may be possible to get a non inletted stock & have it set up for a LH configuration. I did that with my last McMillan A5, Worked fine. If you are completely set on the GreyBull (great stock) call Chad Dixon @ LongRifles, Inc. He can make even a RH inletted stock go southpaw, very cool process & the only smith I use right now.

Thanks D.ID, I gave up on Idaho getting with the program on the reticles, and the year I stop checking they change it. Im very happy with that because I really like the PST.

Just and FYI. Idaho does allow illuminated reticles. See the section I copied from the F&G Site. I also attached a copy of the regs.
