I have two rifles that I want to pillar bed, and epoxy. In the past I have used Acraglass jel, but I have heard that Devcon is the way to go. So off to the industrial hardware store I went. Well, they have a version that comes in cans, that you mix together externally. They also have the two in one tubes that dispense equal amounts. There are a few different options with the " tube type" as well. Which one is the best one that has worked for you. I am told that the devcon does not shrink as bad as the Acraglass. Any input, Thanks.

I've used the devcon plastic steel on several rifles. I like it for the following reasons

It's super strong (Metal impregnated)
It bonds well
It casts smooth
Its easy to work with (consistency is like peanut butter)
Its machinable
It has a good color (gun metal grey)
It works

Devcon 10110 Features:
Bonds most metals, concrete, and some plastics
Cures at room temperature and forms a tough durable metallic mass that can be drilled, tapped, machined, or painted
Excellent resistance to oil, gasoline, water, and many chemicals
Allows patching and repair in areas where welding or brazing would be undesirable or impossible
Useful in hundreds of routine maintenance, production, and tooling applications
Compound has an adhesive tensile shear strength of 2,800 psi and a Hardness 85 Shore D
Listed under NSN Stock #8030-00-903-6545; #8030-00-962-4430

Devcon 10110

Thanks for the reply. Is this stuff in the 2 in 1 tube, or is it the stuff in the cans that you mix together. If it is the stuff in the tube, will one tube bed one rifle or two? Thanks for the info. I have used Acraglas in the past, but it has a different consistency.

I'm going off my buddies word on this one, but he said that whether they come in the tubes or the jars the epoxy is the same you just get a lot more of it in the cans.

He installed pillars and bedded his 700 long action with just one package (2 tubes) of devcon and was really happy with his results. He bought 2 packages as a safety net but said that one was more than enough to do the job.

Thanks, I had to ask the question, because when I went to buy it, there were about five different kinds, I didn't want to get the wrong thing. I am going to use the same compound to anchor the pillars as well. Thanks for the feed back.

I don't believe that this is the case.
The mixing ratio is significantly different and I have never seen the 10110 product in tubes. If I am incorrect someone is free to let me know. However, go ahead and Google it and you'll see.

Look at Devcon's site - no tubes shown:
ITW Devcon | Plastic Steel® Putty (A)

Now I am confused again, however, I have seen that product in my hardware store. Would the above mentioned epoxy in the tube be OK, or is the putty better? I like the consistency of the liquid, BUT?? Thanks for the reply again,

Check what you see in the hardware store.

If it says Devcon Plastic Steel Putty and mixes 2.5:1 by volume or 9:1 by weight then it's the same stuff. If it mixes 1:1 and/or does not say Devcon Plastic Steel Putty then you've got a different Devcon product. Note that they also make a Plastic Steel Epoxy that comes in tubes - that is a different item.

Again, note that the Devcon product page I linked below only shows 1, 4 and 25 pounds containers. You really think those little tubes sold at Lowe's are the same stuff and Devcon just didn't list them on their product page? I don't. :)

The 10110 works very well as many can attest. Give it a try.

I bet the stuff my buddy bought was PlasticSteel "Epoxy" instead of the putty. He did like his results and one package was all he needed to get his gun bedded. Easy to see why he thought it was the same stuff. Thanks for the clarification.

10110 comes in a box that has two round plastic containers with screw on lids. The larger container is the epoxy and the smaller is the hardner.

Thanks for shining some light on that. The industrial hardware store near me has just that. Two cans, one is larger, one small. Pillars are on their way from Sinclair. Thanks for the reply.

I will be picking some up tomorrow. Thanks for the reply and input, much appreciated. Just wanted to be sure what product I was working with, and that I got the RIGHT one. Thanks again!
