for years I have been casting a 30 cal 168 grn rn/gc. It is a layman mould with 7 greese grooves (one of them ends up to be dirrectly infront of the gas check).
I use old wheel wieghts as the casting material and fire it out of a 308win (a wwII mausser convert). I put ? grns of unique, (I never give out my acctual load info, and leave it it up to you to develop your own load) with std primers. If you have a lyman 45th eddition go to the cast section.
Anyway been an obviously SLOOOWW load it is not any good for anything but this because of the need to use a verry differant scope setting. But, it is great fun and I do mean great fun for up to 400yrd gopher shooting.
As you may suspect due to the slow velosity and the big arch that is reqiured to get this out to 4oo yrds, you can take your shot gun), and look into your spotting scope to see the rnd strike :D.
Just for fun, get a mold, get a lead bullet reloading manual and give it a try. It is a lot of fun and you can shoot all day. The recoil is almost non existant and because you can use unique the cost is for powder works out to less than your primer and gas check :).
This is just another way to make your shooting another experiance lightbulb.

Well i cast GC .357/44 mag and non GC 45 Colt 45 ACP Primers are the most expensive thing i pay for. Was thinking about getting a GC maker from lee ( I think) to futher cheapen my pistol shooting. Even loading 200gn Cast Non GC bullets in my 45LC (Black Hawk) SUPER hot no leading. I too use wheel weights. Just a note, install a 20 Amp breaker run to a box and hook up a electric burner to some SJ 10-3 cable and you can melt lead REALLY FAST for smelting.

Was thinking about casting 270 bullets and shooting LOW velocity with them. What velocity are you running?

according to the book 1500fps. I dont have a chrono so I have to take their word. But, considering how much elevation is required to get the 400 yrd shot 1500 sounds like a pretty good figure

Have you tied sr4759, I have just started to use it. I haven't decided if I like it or not. I have used all types of powder for the handcast bullets, some work good others don't do so well.
Unique, bullseye, 2400 all work well will lead bullets. With a gas checked 170 gr. I can get the velocity up aroung 2100 fps. wouldn't want to go any faster as you can start to lead up the barrel.gun)gun)

no I have not tryed sr4759. I have tryed sr4756 and imr4227. I did not like 4756 at all, 4227 gave me faster vel. but, I could not find a load that was accuate.
