So I have an older Rem 700 BDL in 30-06 and the barrel is worn out and I want to re-barrel with a different caliber. I am trying to find out what calibers I can go to with the action that I have. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am looking to build a long range rifle..... Thanks gun)

Spell out your uses for the rifle and you'll get a lot more helpful responses. Hunting? Target? What game and range? Factory or reload? Wildcats ok? Your cartridge options are exceedingly long, so best to narrow it down somewhat.

O.k.......so this will be a hunting rifle, mainly for deer out to 1000 yards. I will be hand loading for this new rifle as well. Wildcat calibers will be considered.

Any long action caliber. Some are drop in fits, others require opening the bolt face, extended magazines, etc. Pick a caliber with the same bolt face and COAL and you have a drop in. Refer to your loading manual or the sticky thread, at the top of the section, regarding cartidge interchangeability.

Tell us what you're thinking of and I can provide specific requirements.

I would take a look at the 280 Ackley Improved. You will get velocities near the 7mm rem mag and wont have the belt to contend with.

The 280 or the 280 AI would be a very good choice and would require very little modification.

With a properly set up 280 AI chamber , you could buy factory ammo to hunt with and fire form
it at the same time. Accuracy can be well below 1 MOA while fire forming to the more powerful
AI version.

Thanks for all of your input, I will look into the 280 AI for sure. Im a huge fan of the .284 caliber. Thanks......

Here is a list of cartridges that you can rebarrel your rifle to without changing mag or boltface dimensions. Some of them are wildcats and some are commercially produced. I didn't see the 270Win listed but I am sure it is also feesible but wasn't listed because of it's minutely longer OAL.

Dennis, thanks so much for all that info. Lots to choose from. Not sure which one I will go with to make the 1000 yard+ shot. Thanks again!!!!!!!!

If you are serious about building a 1000 yd shooter you could do a lot worse than the 6.5-284Norma. It has been proving itself in long range competition, at least there have been magazine articles about them. I have a Ruger 77 tang safe chambered in 25/06Rem that I am considering a rebarrel and might go with a 6.5mm. I have been considering the 6.5-284 and the 6.5-06 A-square.

I have a 280 AI that was originally a 270 win. The ballistics are within 40-50 fps of the 7mm mag with hunting weight bullets in the 145 - 150 gr. class. The rifle is a tack driver capable of 1/4 minute accuracy. Unfortunately the smith that built mine is no longer in business, he had a kick *** reamer for the 280 AI and built many fine shooting rifles.
