IMR4350 vs. H4350

I have a 257 wthby that I am starting to reload for. Looking at the manuals I have, I found several IMR4350 recipes. I do not have the IMR on hand, but have a pound of H4350 on hand. To my understanding the IMR is slower than the H powder. Could I use the H that I already have safely?
 
personaly id be looking at a slower powder if you want max velocitys out of the 257. At least as slow as 4831 and even that in my opinion is a bit fast.

Might want to check your data. According to Hodgdon reloading data center, the 4831 will not quite reach the speeds of the 4350 in any bullet weight.

H4350 looks like it will do just fine, in the velocity area for the range of 257 weight of bullets. There are a couple others that beat it in one or two bullet weights, but overall H4350 does pretty well.
 
well jack all i can post is facts that came from actualy chonographing my loads running powders to the point that pressure signs start developing then backing off a bit. In my experience the 257 is a bit overbore for powders as fast as 4350. Also id look at the pressure that manual gives for that 4350 load then compare it to the pressure for the 4831 load and id bet there loading 4350 to a higher pressure to beat powders like 4831, 7828, re25 ect. Run those powders to the same pressure and see what you get.

117gr Hrdy SPBT

4381 Max 66.0 gr Vel. 3252 Pres. 52,300
4350 Max 60.5 gr Vel. 3266 Pres. 52,000

It is very similiar to that throughout the weight of bullets in their data.

I am sure that different barrels will return different results.

Actually, the one powder they did push the pressure up to show higher velocity was the 7828.

The information I first posted was a direct comparison of 4350 vs 4831. Based on Hodgdon data.

Both are great powders and I use them both. Grant you, not in a 257. I have found their data to be fairly close on the cartridges that I reload.

I loaded some rounds up for my brother in his .270 weatherby using Imr 7828 with 130gr accubonds! The best load out of his gun was right at max in the books, consistent .5-.75 moa out of a stock deluxe. I know its not the same cal but Id try it!
 
Here is how Hodgdon list burn rates,IMR-4350=113, h-4350=114,IMR-7826=132,H-1000=136. Fast to slow1-145.
 
one thing you probably need to look at with that data is thats real mild pressures for the 257. Push both powders to around 57000 plus and the slower powders will leave the faster ones in there dust.
