looking for a scope to put on my 223 and learn to shoot longer distances. I want to learn how to use the mildots efficiently for varmint hunting and if i get good then i want to use for big game. after lots of research and limited funds i have concluded i want a 3-15 ffp tactical weaver with .1 mil adjustments. does anybody have experience with this scope? will i be able to use for big game out to 800+ yards effectively? is there enough adjustment in the turrets to shoot 1000 or will i need modified bases and rings? iv heard good things about this and a lot of bang for your buck

The scope will work on big game just fine. The caliber will not. You can take deer to 200yds with a 223, but I wouldn't go any further.

And, with the right twist rate to stabilize the high BC bullets, you can shoot targets to 800+ yds with that scope and a 223. It simply lacks energy at that distance for reliable kills on big game.
ya i wouldnt try to use that for elk. i just want to learn the scope on the 223 and once i get efficient using it i will transfer to my 300 win mag. i currently have leupold vx 2 3-9 on both of those guns. i just need a good scope at a decent price to learn to shoot longer distances. i have shot elk out to 500-600 with the scope i have now but i wast completely comfortable with it so i think its time to upgrade. I appreciate the feedback. LRH is an AWESOME website and im excited i found it!

Definitely not .223 for taking big game at much distance. In fact, in a few states is illegal.

I vastly prefer MOA. But, many prefer MIL. Either can be equally effective.
I would be sure to get a scope that uses the same scale in both the reticle and turret adjustments.

I also prefer MOA. You have picked a great caliber to learn to shoot. No recoil and cheap to load and shoot all day with. Good luck.l
what are the advantages of MOA to MIL? when it comes to judging range if your scope has "mil dots" doesnt that directly correlate to the mil adjustments? i am more familiar with mils than MOA. What is a reticle in MOA called? and do you prefer MOA to Mils because that is what you learned to shoot with or is there an advantage in functionality? Appreciate the input. thanks again

No.
If you spot your impact 1 MIL left, you can hold or dial 1 MIL right to compensate. Same goes for MOA.
But ranging goes something like this...
Height of target in inches x 27.8/Mils read = Distance to target in yards
Height of target in inches x 100 /MOA read = Distance to target in yards

MOA is easy for me to remember.
1 MOA at 100yds = 1"
1 MOA at 300yds = 3"
1 MOA at 500yds = 5"
1 MOA at 1000yds = 1000"
It mostly comes down to preference or need. e.g. If you're in the millitary or LE, you might be required to use MIL.

The scope your looking at is mil/mil, that is what you want. You dont need to worry about the measurement. You read the reticule. If you shoot 1.5 mil low and 1 mile left, that is what you adjust.If it takes 4.5 mil for a 750 yrd. shot you can use reticule or dial with that scope. and you can do that on any power setting. THE dial is a little larger adjustment, which is similar to Greybull, huskamaw, and NFG7. Which are 1/3 minute. .o1 mil= .36 inch. That scope will do what you want.
Sp6x6 thats what i have concluded after reading and researching all of this. some people say that its preference but it seems others say mil/mil is tho only way to go. I think that is going to be the path im going to take. i noticed some people replying to this thread are from montana. im from helena but currently located in missoula, if anybody nearby would be willing to show me the ropes that would be awesome. just let me know. I would like to have some people with experience to point me in the right direction and teach me important techniques to shooting. If i could get time i would join a shooting club but i dont know of any around. thanks again
