Im rechambering and would like some advise. Its a 270win now and I dont want to change the bolt if possible so Im very interested in these:
6.5x284
6.5-06
280AI
260AI

Please discuss pros, cons
thanks

I have the same basic question and surprized to see 0 input on this conversion. Surely someone has some yay of nay comments?

Any of those are possible. Depends on what you want to do with the rifle.

I hope you mean that your are re-barreling and not re-chambering.

.250 AI would be my choice for a 1000 yard target rifle.

The .257 does not offer the selection of bullets in high BC the .264 or .284 have available.

Build a 6.5-06 and you can use your old 270 brass to neck down and cut to length. Those 130 gr. And 140gr. 6.5mm bullets are hard to beat. It has basically the same ballistics as the 6.5x284- brass is easier to get and cheaper- neck up 25-06 brass.
The 280AI would be a good one too, have better bullet selection, but it does not feed through the action as good as the 6.5-06 case, that 40 degree shoulder seems to catch sometimes. Recoil will be more too.lightbulb

I'm in the process right now of taking my 721 30/06 and turning her into a 280AI. I deliberated on this for a while and just couldn't get away from all those slippery 7mm pills out there and knowing it'll have enough punch to take down just about anything i will find myself hunting.

Yes I will be buying new barrel for it but I do not want to spend $200 on a new bolt to change the bolt face size, so thats why the calibers listed. I really like the 6.5 and 7mm bullets so I think Im going with either the 6.5-06 or the 280

721's are just as easy to build from as a 700.

Mill the tang for the safety and it is a complete interchange for all 700 parts.

I've built a couple. Latest is a 6.5x284.

This is good input on the 280 and the 6.5. Hard to beat those slipperey pills when stretching her out there a little.

geargrinder> Tell us more about the 6.5x.284 and what if any modifications or advantages it will have over the 6.5-06?

timmay> Apologies for kinda highjacking your thread, but you posted a question I have a great deal of interest in.

I love my .280, but if I had the option i would go AI. Any talk of the .280 not feeding well is folly, they feed great.

If your not gonna go with the .280/.280 AI I would go for the 6.5-.284.

All the calibers mentioned are in the same performance class, but the .280 beats them all in barrel life and knock down power.
