need advice guys. looking to put together 1000 yards rifle but for a budget. have a few things in mind, I want to hear some opinions.
I'm thinking about savage 6.5x284 norma or in a .308
a .300 winmag
7mm mag.
with the scope i think the Bushnell elite 6500 4.5 30x50. its the most reasonable one. Leupold vx-3 8.5-25x50 gets a bit pricy.not to mention the nightforce 5.5 22x50

300 win, 6.5x284 then 308. All Great rounds. For just punching paper and low cost go with the 308.

6BR and 6.5x284 are 2 of my all time favorite cartridges to shoot.

But, 308 is economical to shoot and match grade factory ammo is a big plus if you haven't started reloading.

300WM will reach out there. But, more expensive.

like the power as well. i dont want to change next couple of month. I would like it to stay with me for a little time. so if i have to spend a little more but knowing that i can be satisfied with it.

I'm open for all suggestion
precision is important, dont care too much about over penetration. so let me just say that any where for a complete package between 1500-2000 is the budget.

I just got a Savage LRP in 260rem. Sub .5MOA with 140 Amax, Berger VLD's, or 142SMK's. Got it for LR targets out to 1000. Couldn't be happier with this rifle!

The 6.5x.284's been winning most of the matches and setting virtually all the records for shoulder fired long range rifles when any cartridge is allowed by the rules. It's easier to shoot accurately 'cause of its lighter recoil while the bullets going down the barrel. While it's not got quite the barrel life of a .308 Win., it's twice that of the 7mm and 30 caliber magnums.

Get one in a Savage target rifle and you'll have an excellent one on a budget.

Does it shoot under .5 MOA at 1000?

This is a frustrating comment for me.

if the gun can shoot .5moa at 100 yrds, it can shoot .5moa at 1000yrds... because it's just an angle the shooter is the difference at 1000yrds. Being able to calculate windage, have a consistant load, incorporate barometric pressure, ammo temp, air temp, bore temp/seasoning etc.... thats the difference at 1000yrds... if a gun shoots repeatably at 100 yrds.... it will do the same at 1000 yrds... it's the shooter that won't.

I built my package for under $2K (bought everything brand new)....the scope is not the best, but has functioned flawlessly for me. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one of those scopes after using mine for the last 1.5 years.

Remington 700 5R .308
Konus M-30 8.5-32x52
EGW HD 0-MOA base
TPS TSR Medium Aluminum rings
