7stw, 168 VLD, Back to the drawing board

I have working with 168 VLD, and a charge of n170. Well, I took my chrono to the range and wasnt too impressed with velocity. A 80 grain charge gets me about 2850. A 82 grain charge gets me 3012 with 162 A Max. I feel like I have headroom on the charge, but I was expecting a little more than that . Both are very accurate, but my 7 mags get that speed easy. N170, seems to burn a little slower than Retumbo, so suppose I could almost go to compressed loads and still be safe. This is a Sako 75 that I bought back in December. It does not seem to like 140's,so I tried the 168's, which have been accurate, no surprise , but just need to get the velocity up. Would like to get it to about 3100-3150. With the 162's, maybe around 3200. Just sort of a update to a previous post. Any thoughts or suggestions? AIM SMALL, MISS SMALL. lightbulb 7 STW.

I have an STW built by Travis at Rbros rifles, mine likes RL22 77gr with fed215gm. COAL is touching the lands. He installed a wyatts mag box on mine so i can keep it a repeater. my average vel. was 3240fps and my ES was 17fps not to bad for me. i did try H1000 first but velocity was only 3055fps switched to RL22 to get my velocity up.

I have been playing with the 162 amax in mine. I shot some 3 shot groups yesterday over my chrono with retumbo. 79.7 gr gave groups in the .3's at 100 and velocity averaged 3287. I worked up to a max of 80.2 good for 3323. This is from a 30 inch barrel. I have some H-1000 rounds loaded up for some more groups and velocity testing. I am hoping for the speed with a little less pressure. I hope Long Time Long Ranger will weigh in here. He has like 9 stw's and can recite the exact burn rates for every powder ever created.... , well maybe not but LTLR we would love to here your experience with the 160's

I have 2-7stw's- 1 has a 26in. no.5a Douglas and a rem700 26in stock stainless barrel- getting 3250 av.- chrony set 10 ft. with 79gr. Of IMR 7828 sc with 160 gr. Nosler AB. They are fairly hot, but shoot great and will punch a deer's ticket. Have one kill at 595 yds.- 2 holes through the shoulder. That is sufficient for me if it will do that every time.

Yea, I think that is more the way that I think that I am going to end up. The accuracy is there, but with the powder I am using the speed is not there. With my other STW's, RL22 and 7828 makes them come to life with 140's, but I thought I could utilize the n-170, but I think it is TOO slow, even if I compress it. When the weather allows, I am going to load up some with rl22, and 7828, using the 162 A-Max, and the 168vld. I also have some 160 fail safes, that I absolutely love. This gun has a definite preference to 160 class,versus 140's. That is fine with me. The good thing is that I have plenty of good brass. I recently acquired 140 rounds of factory premium ammo. Some of it actually shoots very well just as it is. ( but I like my own better) thanks for the reply.

Derek, that might just be the ticket. I have a good supply of 22 and some 7828, and 4 lbs of H1000. I have had excellent luck with the RL powders for the STW in the past. You could be on to something there with the 25. That would give me good load density, and good velocity. I'll add that to my shopping list, as I am going to make a order at my dealer today. That may be just perfect! I have not shot the 25 yet, now I got good reason. Thanks.

Fred, I went to the range today with the Sako. I ended up trying some 162 A-maxes, that have shown me good promise. This time I went back to my trusty supply of RL-22. I dropped in 75.5 grains@ 3.700 coal. The mag box on this Sako is LONG. It was to windy today to shoot at 200, and actually breezy enough that I did not set up my chrono either. I had to time my shooting, but I got consistent grouping @ 100 yards. Smallest group, .390, largest group, .424. I did not shoot the 168's today, as I wanted to shoot some other groups, and concentrate on the 162's. I was impressed to say the least. As far as the Sierra book goes, I am at max recommendation with RL22. I had NO pressure signs at all. I would like to be in the 3200-3250 velocity area with these bullets as well. I probably am not there now, but hopefully can get the chrono out next weekend. Just an update!
