257wby vs 30-06

Good day to all! I have a Rem 700 LSS 257wby with timney trigger and fluted bbl that a guy wants to trade for his Winchester extreme weather 30-06 models set aside do you figure this would be a good trade? Ballistically is the 257 better for shots out to and beyond 400 meters which one would you use?

I've owned a 30-06 for 30+ years, but I just bought a 257 Weatherby for my "go to" anything-smaller-than-elk rifle. I'd keep the 257.

30-06 hands down. Old school west coast do all rifle.

The east coast guys version of the do all seems to be the 257. Why? I Dunno.

Maybe cause we have Elk on the menu the -06 is more appealing?

I just wouldn't limit myself to a 115 gr .25 cal bullet, when I could whack gopher to griz with the ol -06. From 55 gr accellerators to 220 gr+ bullets.
The 257, while probably a great round just doesn't cut it for some folks as anything more than a varmint/deer crossover round. For that purpose, the 257 shines, but so does the -06....
Not trying to ruffle any feathers, just a difference in opinion, & critters in geographical locations, along with intended use on game, that makes the -06 the hands down, no contest winner imo.

Guess it comes down to what you wanna do with it, game wise. Deer, & dogs I guess the 257 would be fine, but for bigger critters (Elk, Moose, Bear, etc) I know what I'd choose.

2 of my favorites, tough choice. I know you said models aside, but then you did tell us the models. 30-06 in the Winchester. Where you're located, a bit more bullet might come in handy now and then.

Good previous info on the o6 for its versatility.

What are you hunting? If just deer...the 257 no question. At the ranges you mention the 06 does not give up much and is much more versitile.

If it was me...I would keep the 257 and make an offer on the 06. I am a firm believe there is no one caliber that works best for all hunting situations.

In this day and age of ultra magnums. The 30-06 or even the 300 win are not even worth getting. Just wait this one out till a real 30 cal comes around. I heard once that a 220 grain out of 06 was more like a artillery round because you put the barrel at a 45 degree angle and shoot!

I have to ask you, Have you ever owned either a 300 win or a 30-06? They migh be old school but they have remained popular for many years for a reason. I have owned all the super magnums of the recent years production. I now have went back to a 300 win. I think a day busting rocks with my 300 win and you may have a different opinion.

257 whby my pick. I hate 30-06's because hunting with my cousin years ago i thought it was the most crippling gun i ever seen. But it wasent the guns fault and they have been around for ever. When i started hunting if you seen a guy with the old plaid woolrich he was totong an 06 and was normally a somebody. Im a 25 fan owning several especially in wildcats and one caliber of my own design. Taken several deer and 1 cow elk at 450 yards. Very accurate, hard hitting, mild recoil.

Ive killed a lot of elk with it. Doesnt matter with either caliber if you put the bullet in the right place every time.

I got my first elk when i was 13 or 14 with a 30-06. It has been my life experience that you can download and refine a bigger volume case, but you can't upload a small case. Life is all about choices. When people get on me for getting rid of my 30-30 and 30-06 that has killed everything and won every war. I choose to go forward. I actually hate it when somebody quotes PO ackley's book. It was good and up to date in 1968. That is over 40 years ago. Modern powders negate many of his statements.

I work on historic race cars and I always hear the same crap about some hot rod car from the pre 71 era. I know exactly what they can and can't do. I owned a few of them and worked on many more.

I don't really defend any caliber. I've owned 22-250 thru 458 win mag and i know what they each can do. I do defend long heavy barrel rifles that people have put time and thought into.

You apparently like smaller case capacity rifles.............. that's fine. As to the poster the 257W is a fine rifle for it's intended purpose.
