7/08 Reload Info

My nephew just purchase a Kimber 84M in a 7/08, 22" tube, 9 twist. Looking for the ideal bullet weight. Shooting whitetail in the South, max range should be around 600yds. I know it should spin a 180 Berger, but I'm sure there is a point of diminishing return in velocity vs weight issue. Would the 150 BT or 162 Amax be a better balance and more efficient. Never played with this round before.

Middle of the road bullet would be 140gr.My stepson smoked his first small buck last year using 7mm-08 120 gr ttsx bullet with varget at 200 yards.

Theirs lots of good 7mm-08 loads. My current set is using either 162 amax or 168 hunting VLD's. Both shoot sub MOA out to 320 yards, that iv'e tested. Shot the amax to 1k without any problems.

Wichester case and cci -200 primers
H4350 powder
162 amax is running at 2750 avg.
168 vld is running at 2715 avg.

The 7/08 is one of my favorite cartriges and I tried almost every bullet known to man.
and interestingly enough after killing almost a hundred deer with it. I found that ''the''
best combo was a 120gr ballistic tip in front of 49.5 grs of H414 with a CCI br2 primer
for a velocity of 3010 in a 20'' barrel.

I will shoot below 1/10th of an inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards and drops deer in there
tracts.

The 120 seams to be ideal for trajectory and energy. I had always leaned towards the
heaver bullets but with the lower velocities bullet performance was not as good.

Most of the deer ran 10+yards hit perfict with 140s and 160s but fell in there tracts with
the 120.

Try it and you wont be sorry.

I have had great success loading RL-19, in RP cases, WLR primers and Hornady BTSP bullets. This is a great deer load and I have seen my friend kill many deer with this load from 50 to 310 yards.

I've had success with a 120 NBT or TSX over 44.0 grains R15, R/P hulls and 210 GM primer, gets me 2,950'ish in a 22" barrel. Now trying the same bullet over 50.0 Big Game, velocity is about 3040, but book shows it should be over 3,100.

When I ran the numbers on your MV it shows the 120's having 1000 lbs of energy out to 500 yds. What's your longest shot with the 120's? Sounds like this will be a fun round to play with since I'll be doing the reloading for my nephew. He should be able to really reach out there for coyotes too!

With Varget I can get 3150 but the accuracy is not quite as good in my rifle.

With a 7/08 pistol I have made 520+ yard shots on deer. With the rifle I have exceeded 600
yards with no problem using this load.

I try to limit myself to 500 yards with the 120 BTip and if it looks like I have to shoot farther,
most of the time I simply decline or take a larger rifle.

I know it will do the job at longer distances on game, but on targets it will shoot to 1000 yards
and still be accurate. (If target shooting, I normally load 140s to 168s).
