168 ttsx Seating Depth

Ok,

Im fairly new to this reloading thing, and am getting an order of stuff ready to try in my 300wm.

I already have lots of 200gr accubond. 165gr SST.

I was looking at the 165gr TTSX, but I read on website that the like to be seated just off lands:

"Barnes recommends initially seating bullets 0.050" off the lands. Best accuracy will be found from 0.030" to 0.070" depending on the rifle."

It will be shooting out of my a-bolt, and must have a COAL of 3.35 (maybe +.006) to fit the clip.

The lands are @3.5"

So I am wondering, is it worth trying, can I get them to shoot decently with the "jump"?

I dont want a single shot rifle outta this.

Maybe i missed something but why cant you go shorter than 3.35? Unless i missed something i would think that you could easily achieve the .05 jump recommended.

From my experience the Barnes TTSX bullets like the jump, so you should not have difficulty in finding an accurate load. I have been able to find accurate loads for a number of rifles shooting the TTSX bullets, including 30-06 's, 300 WSM's, 280 Rem, 260 Rem, and 243 Win..

I can go shorter than 3.35" that is what my clip will allow. But my lands are out to 3.5" so.......

Maybe im missing something, but wouldn't I need an OAL of about aprox 3.45" to make the .050 jump? Cause that aint fitting in my clip.....

Like I said maybe Im missing something in this concept.

Your title line states the 168 ttsx and you asked about the 165 ttsx ? Either one has some things to consider according to the Barnes #4 book for the 300wm. They state for the 165 powder charges of less than 100% should be used and for the 168 seated to saami max of 3.340 the case mouth falls in front of the bullet olgive and they recommend crimping to improve feeding. Hope this helps.

I also have an A-Bolt in 300wm I use the 168 ttsx seated at 3.377 .030 off lands just does feed in mag. Best acuracy is at 3050 fps I use ramshot magnum. shooting clover leaf groups at 100

Ok cool, tks every one for your posts, I will have to go home tonight and re measure my lands.

What method do you guys use to do this?

I talked to a couple reloaders, and they told me they took a empty cartridge with bullet barely seated and seated it in the chamber, measured it and that gave them measurement to the lands. They said it would be the easiest way for me to measure it.

This is what I did to measure mine, but like I mentioned before, I am new to this and wanna do it right.

using an O.A.L. gauge [overall length gauge]. I use a piece of brass that has been fired from my rifle that has been neck sized to the dimension I want. I bought the tap so I can drill and tap the primer end and mount it to my gauge. The cases is reamed slightly larger than the caliber so a bullet will slide smoothly in and out. Load the bullet you are checking into the case slide it into the chamber and push the bullet till it touches the lands. Tightrn the set screw remove and measure. I will do this at least a dozen times till I am sure I have the correct measurement.

Im now severly confused.

Letting the lands seat a bullet in a case (jamming bullet into lands) is 3.51" COAL.

If I back off the recomended .050" that is giving me an OAL of 4.450" COAL.

My Clip holds a 3.36" COAL.

So, how are you fitting a cartrige into your clip and maintaining a .050" of the lands.... im confused lol.... im using an A-Bolt II in .300WM

I don't know that jamming a seated bullet into the lands is going to give you the correct starting measurement. Hence everything else is no good. Max coal for 300wm is 3.34 by the book. I have not had a problem with them fitting in my rifle. I don't have the measurement off hand to give it. I believe others are checking the lands by using sharpie on bullet and seating till the witness marks are very faint and using that measurement. basically chambering the round then ejecting it and checking it, readjust die in press seat the bullet a little deeper recolor and chamber again.....etc... till they are satisfied the bullet is lightly topuching the lands.
