So Monday I picked up a 1/2" 3'x3' steel plate (all 190lbs of it) and made a stand for it with $25 at Lowes. Went out to the 395 about 5 miles north of Boron CA to some BLM land. The wind was crazy, 25 mph steady with 35 mph gusts, it was enough to shake the truck. We where able to put the wind mostly behind us. Since the wind was so bad we picked a spot 944 yards out (ranged with my Bushnell Fusion 1600 LRF Bino's) to start. Entered the data in to Shooter and set the dope to 6.8mils up and 1.2mils right. First shot I missed, second shot hit low and left, added .1 mil up and .1 mil right to the scope and made hits near the center on the next 4 shots. After 5 hits in a row we decided to move back to another clearing that put us out to 1220 yards. First shot was a miss ,forgot to adjust the scope, Doh! Shooter (Android ballistics app) called for 10.6mil up and .8 mil right. After setting the dope I made a hit near the center, next shot was center right. It was 47 deg, blowing like crazy and it was going to be dark soon so we called it a day.

I was amazed at how much energy the 300gr Scenar hit the plate with. I didn't expect the damage to the top of the frame above the steel from the shrapnel. Nor did I expect the trench under the steel! Very impressive.

Savage 110FCP 338 Lapua loads,
300gr Scenar
89gr N570
Fed 215M
3.698OAL (puts me at .015 off the lands)
2700fps

Photo taken at max zoom of the camera, I think 3x.

A shooting experience like that has got to leave you full of confidence in both yourself and your rifle. Good job and great pictures. Silly question with that caliber but what did you think about the recoil?

The recoil is not bad at all, but Im a long time big bore hand gun guy. Friends of mine who have shot it say its not bad. Its got a push to it, not a sharp recoil.

I've played with both the Scenar and SMK's. In general, the Scenars seem to fly better for me and are less sensitive to jump. Have not tried the Berger OTM's yet.
My cousin used the 250 scenar's on the first outing to 1070yds and printed a 6in group. That was with little load development. He has since gone to the SMK's with good results.

IIRC 1.4 Mils Right. For the 5 shot group the wind was at about 160deg from me. The 1220 yard shot the wind was more behind us, close to 170deg so I dialed in .8 Mils Right.

Ooooh Noooo! :D I know all you guys think the Mils are easier but I am sitting here trying to figure out how much that is. I mil is 36" @ 1000 right? so it is 50 .4 inches, at 1000 it would be about 4 .75 moa and the 160 degree wind is about a 5 oclock wind correct??? :D:D

That is good shooting with the wind for sure.

I am awaiting delivery a Savage 110 FCP HS in 338. I had a question about scope base size. Is the action size the same as the current standard long action LRH? I have a Ken Ferrel 20mm steel one piece base that fits a Savage Long Range Hunter, long action, and wanted to use this base. Thanks

Yes and no. The round top action is the same but the 110fcp uses larger base screws, #8-40 (#6-40 is standard). You wound need to have your base enlarged for the bigger screws.
