Sako A7 vs Win M70 extreme

Sako A7 going on sale for $659 blued at Cabelas.
Sportsmans Warehouse has the Winchester M70 extreme sporter which has a black fluted barrel (doesnt looked blued, Im thinking its the stainless model with a black coating)

I want a 270 wsm and have narrowed it down to these two..actually the tikka is still in it also

I really like how the m70 looks and feels. The bolt seems beefier but is nowhere near as smooth as the Sako. Its also controoled round feed (doesnt really matter to me though)
The Sako feels great and has super smooth action
the m70 just feels more durable to me but the Sako does not feel weak at all.
I like them both alot and they are both priced the same.
Im having a real hard time deciding

I can answer the Winchester question for you, as I currently have a similar model in the Extreme Weather in 300 WSM. The next step for me would be to look beyond factory production at the foundation for a future build. With the Winchester you already have a solid stock with the aluminum blocked B&C, and the solid CRF M70 action. The Winchester smooths out real nice with a little lithium grease and use. For accuracy, I have had no trouble working several handloads to 3/4 MOA or much better.

At that price, I think that particular Winchester is the better choice over the A7.

I dont think you can go wrong with the M-70. Plus as far as I know there American made in South Carolina. Scope sounds like a good deal to. You will Love the 270wsm. Awsome round!

You are correct. They are built in SC. Another plus with the M70 is the longer short action for the WSM. You can seat long bullets out to the lands and maintain the use of your magazine. This was a nice bonus for me since I had been constricted to a COAL of 2.86" by a Browning Abolt in 300 WSM, now I can easily load to just above 3.00".

I didnt know that but thats nice to know because I just bought the M70 and I do reload.
I was wrong on the scope price though it was the weaver super slam 2.5-10x42 that is on sale for 389, the 3.5-15x42 is on sale too but for $489

no I passed even though it was a pretty good deal. Im going to save a few more bucks for either a Vortex Viper pst or the Sightron S3 or a super sniper HD

FYI if you decide to go with a one piece base, you'll need an M70 WSM base. As I said earlier, the WSM action is a touch longer than a standard short action. Therefore, an M70 short action base will not work.

A few manufacturers that make M70 WSM rails are Nightforce, Seekins, and EGW.

Just bought the Win 70 Extreme Sporter at our local Sportsmans. Have the old push feed laminated coyote in 270 wsm and it is a little to heavy to carry in the field. I love this caliber, actually my favorite. Gonna top it with a Nikon Monarch 4.5-16x42 mildot put it in use for muleys and speed goats!

Interesting... no votes for Sako.

I have a Win 70 EW in 338. You get a lot of good components with this rifle and the afore mentioned point about the magazine box being long in the short magnums is huge. The Winchester has just about everything I like about a rifle. Sadly, it doesn't shoot up to my expectations. What's strange is that my expectations aren't really that high. $1100 rifle, $1500 scope, all torqued to specs. Shot off sandbags, should shoot good, right? Wrong! 2-1/2" groups w/ factory ammo (5-shot). Handloads are better but very finicky. 3-shots @ 1" but opens way up after 3. Just got it back from the gunsmith who installed an extended magazine box, bedded action and modifies the ejection port so the spent rounds didn't dribble out so pathetically. Part of the problem is the large diameter bullet in a skinny barrel. The muzzle wall is thiiiiiiiiiin. Other calibers might not have this issue but I've heard they do. Only gunwriters think 2+MOA is a good group.

Now the Sako (which I do not own but might soon). Under 7 lbs. 5-shot Guarantee to shoot under 1 MOA with a variety of factory ammo. That's one short paragraph.

the sako barrels should be very similar to the m70 as far as thickness goes. They are both skinny sporter barrels.
If you decide on buying a Sako A7 you should do it now if you have the money because they are on sale for $200 off at Cabelas right now. The stainless normally is listed for 899 but right now its $699
Blued lists for $799 and is on sale for $649, Im not sure how much longer the sale is going to last.

Regarding the Model 70 extreme sporter sold by Sportsmans Warehouse, my 300 wsm has "Morgan Utah" stamped on the barrel. I thought I was getting one of the SC guns when I purchased this rifle but that doesn't appear to be the case. Very nice rifle for $650.

I'd pick Sako or Tikka. My buddy bought a M70 coyote lite in .270wsm a few years ago. I know winchester has moved it's factory and the rifles might be different now...... But his gun turned out to be worthless. It shoots 2-3 inch groups @100yds. If you change ammo, the point of impact will shift considerably, and has never shot well overall with factory or handloads. Then after maybe 100 rounds down the tube, the ejector spring broke. would not eject rounds, they would just stick to the boltface. Gunsmith made a new spring and said that the factory one was garbage.

I have two tikkas and they are awesome rifles. They will eat any ammo you feed them and puch quarters no problem. Smooth actions, great triggers, sako barrels, competitive price.
