Broken ejector on Savage 111

This afternoon my son and I were out sighting in his new Savage Mod 111 in 25-06 after I bedded the stock and action. We had shot several of my handloads and were pleased with the improvement over the unbedded stock... He wanted to get a feel for what factory ammo would do so I had two boxes of factory stuff. The first box was a 110 grain of Accubond Federal. He shot three rounds and got a horrible group. As he went to check the target I took the rifle and opened the bolt and noticed that the primer had been blown out the back of the round. As I looked at the other two rounds one of these had also blown out the primer. Needless to say we stopped shooting those rounds! But it broke the ejector and I have no idea on how to take it out and replace it.... Any help would be awesome

If your talking about the claw part, it will just push out. Use a punch or a small screwdriver and push it away from the bolt face. Just try and keep a finger or thumb over the top. There is a tiny spring and ball bearing under the ejector claw. May want to get the head space checked. Make sure it isn't to tight causing over pressure. Did you notice if your son had any problems closing the bolt?

No the claw part is the extractor.... The ejector is the pin just off of the firing pin hole. No problems on closing the bolt.... As I said this was factory ammo... I didnt notice a problem until I extracted the spent brass and noticed the primer sitting in the mag... I see there is a retaining pin on the bolt and I assume that it needs to be punched out to replace the ejector.... Question is what to use as a punch... Have broken two punches so far and havent budged the retaining pin... Looks like the ejector spring failed with the hot load....

Gonna pull all those rounds!

The pin only goes one way. The ejector has to be pushed flush with the face of the bolt face. Sorry about the other advice, had a brain fart! There is a flat milled on the ejector pin that only allows the retaining pin to be removed. One guy suggested a paper clip. Can you post a picture please?

I got the ejector retaining pin out finally.... had to use a little elbow grease and a hammer.... The ejector is still stuck inside and wont come out.... I think that I am going to have to drill it out.... I have new parts on order from Savage... Its just getting the old ones out...

Wondering if the headspace could be off to cause a factory round to pop a primer... I have never seen this before....

Not sure what to tell you on getting that pin out. Just be careful drilling that you don't make the ejector hole any bigger. As for headspacing, that is the only thing I can think of, unless it is a small chamber, or they have some pretty hot loads from factory. May want to call your ammo manufacturer and see if they have had any other problems with that particular lot#. I have to go to work. Let us know how things work out. Sorry about your rifle.

I know this is a rather old thread, but I'm having the exact same issue with the ejector stuck. I have a feeling it is the same thing with the spring totally bust.
But I'm unable to get the pin out. I have removed all the necessary parts, but the ejector pin is stuck.

So HOW did you get your ejector pin out?!
Did you have to drill it?

I have had the opportunity to fix a few of these since then. I went to Ace Hardware and picked up a punch to remove the retaining pin from the bolt. Spray some penetrating oil on the ejector and let it set for about 30 min. Take the punch and work the extractor back and forth. It will start to move. Tap the bolt face on a flat surface. This may break it loose so you can pull it out with a dental pick or something like that.

I had one that a buddy did on a 223 reload that was way to hot that I had to drill. Dont sweat drilling them its easy just go slow. The new ejectors are designed differently and are not as prone to failing.

Remember just go slow. You can totally rebuild your bolt so dont worry. Hope this helps

It's very easy ... in fact there's quite a few you tube "how-to" videos to assemble/disassemble Savage bolts.

Thanks again for the help.

However, I already know how to disassemble the bolt face, but when I remove the retaining pin, the ejector doesn't pop out as it normally would. It's most likely because the spring is bust, but more than that the ejector is stuck, so tapping it doesn't make it move at all.
I'm starting to believe that I might have to drill it, but I'm a little uncertain on the correct drillsize for this.
Could you possibly help me with this?
I'm going to try to soak it in ammonia first though, since I read a few places, that this might help, if it is some brass debris that's clogging it.

On another note, do you know any other online gunshops other than Midwayusa and Brownells, because the ejector and spring are out-of-stock, and won't be delivered until january 2014.
