Superformance w/ A-Max?

So one day I was just thinking about life... And this idea spark struck me!

What if... I took a factory Hornady 162gr SST Superformance in 7RM. I used the same powder charge of Superformance but instead tipped the load with a 162gr A-Max.. Has this been done before? Or anything similiar?

Who has done development using Superformance before? Is it all as good as Hornady claims?

Are you talking about pulling the bullet and reseating a Amax? Or using superformance powder with the Amaxs? Because the superformance powder you can buy is not the same as what's factory loaded.

really? I thought it was the same.. Hornady was saying how the load data for their Superformance 6.5CM is printed on the box and you can make your own clones.. I'd think its the same.

A bud of mine makes his own .270 140gr SST Superformance; the same as factory too.. it shoots and flies the same.

And what I would do is just pull the bullet off a factory. Measure the charge weight. Then use that same weight in a load using the A-Max

A lot of there loads are a special blend of powders, that may differ from one cartrige to another.

Ohh OK, yea after I read what you said I did some research and found they use mixtures that arnt even available to the market? Hmm.. that sucks..

Have you ever used the marketed Superformance powder at all? Is it any good?

I haven't yet but would like too. I have too look up what caliber they have loads for. Was surprised they don't have a 223 load but might be a little slow burning for the popular 55 bullets?

I did it with the 243. Bought a box of 95 gr sst's and pulled the bullets. Powder averaged 48.5 grs. Also worked up a load with the 105 A-max with 44.5 grs with MV of 2970 fps with 22" barrel. A great deer round!

Well from personal experience, I would never use an SST on any game animal. Horrible performance, and that was in a 308 regular Hornady factory ammo. So, to use an SST at even higher velocities is unthinkable unless that animal was WAAY out there. Total blow up at 230 yards on a small pronghorn.

But, I'm very glad this thread came up because I didn't even think about buying the factory stuff and pulling the bullets, and reload them with MY bullet of choice! Bass Pro has a ton of Superformance on the shelf in many of the calibers I shoot.

Will likely go down tomorrow morning and leave with about 20 boxes.

Very true... Wonder why they market the Superformance powder saying "you can load your own favorite Hornady loads" if its not going to be the same. lol

So checkout what I just learned... I looked up Superformance on Hodgdon's website and found this -
